# Péter Magyar The lawyer and former government insider who built the **TISZA Party** (Tisztelet és Szabadság, "Respect and Freedom") into the vehicle that ended [[Viktor Orbán]]'s 16-year grip on Hungary. Magyar's significance to this vault is hard to overstate: he defeated, at the ballot box, the single most-studied model of "illiberal democracy" in the Western world — the system [[Steve Bannon]] called "Trump before Trump" and the template admired across the Global [[New Right]]. ## From insider to challenger Magyar spent years inside the Fidesz-aligned establishment — he was married to former Justice Minister Judit Varga and held positions in state-linked institutions — before breaking publicly with the regime in early 2024. His defection was catalyzed by a clemency scandal that forced Varga and the country's president from public life. Rather than join an exhausted, fragmented opposition, Magyar built a new movement from scratch, drawing enormous crowds with an anti-corruption, pro-European message and channeling broad disgust at the cronyism of the Orbán years. TISZA's strong showing in the **June 2024 European Parliament election** established it overnight as the only opposition force polling near Fidesz, and won Magyar a seat in Brussels. ## The 2026 landslide In the **April 12, 2026** parliamentary election — with turnout near 80 percent — TISZA won a landslide. With nearly all precincts counted, the party took roughly **138 of 199 seats on about 53.6 percent of the vote**, against 55 seats and 37.8 percent for Fidesz. The margin handed TISZA a two-thirds supermajority, enough to amend the constitution that Orbán had reshaped to entrench his own power. Orbán conceded. At his victory rally Magyar told supporters, "together we replaced the Orbán regime, together we liberated Hungary." ## Operation Cleansing Fire On 22 June 2026, Magyar answered the "what to watch" question with [[Operation Cleansing Fire]] — a sweeping institutional reform program announced in a parliamentary address. The initiative includes a new constitution (review starting September 2026, subject to referendum), a national anti-corruption agency to trace misappropriated assets from the [[Orbán Kleptocracy]], PM term limits of eight years (barring Orbán's return), judicial age limits to force Orbán-allied judges into retirement, and the removal of President [[Tamás Sulyok]], an Orbán appointee who has refused to resign. The EU dimension is critical: Magyar's reforms are designed to satisfy conditionality requirements for €16.4 billion in frozen EU funds — making the anti-corruption drive simultaneously a democratic restoration and an economic lifeline. The initiative tests the central question for post-authoritarian transitions: whether a captured state can be un-captured through democratic processes without becoming what it replaced. Magyar's two-thirds supermajority gives him the constitutional tools Orbán used to entrench power — whether he uses them to dismantle entrenchment or to create new entrenchment is the defining question of his premiership. ## See Also - [[Viktor Orbán]] — the system he defeated and is now dismantling - [[Tisza Party]] — the party he built and now governs with - [[Hungarian History Hub]] — the long arc behind the 2026 handover - [[Fundamental Law of Hungary]] — the constitutional machine he inherited intact - [[Operation Cleansing Fire]] — the June 2026 institutional reform program - [[Tamás Sulyok]] — the Orbán-appointed president resisting removal - [[Orbán Kleptocracy]] — the corruption apparatus under investigation - [[International Democratic Opposition Hub]] - [[National Conservatism]] — the ideology that treated Orbán's Hungary as a model
