# Nikos Michaloliakos
**Born 1957.** Mathematician, founder of [[Golden Dawn]], and the only European party leader convicted of directing his own party as a criminal organization.
## The Continuity
Michaloliakos is the direct human link between the [[Greek Junta]] and Greek neo-Nazism. He came up in the far-right youth milieu that formed around the colonels, was jailed in the late 1970s over a bombing-adjacent case and for assaulting journalists at a junta figure's funeral, and founded the magazine that became Golden Dawn in 1980 — six years after the dictatorship fell.
**That six-year gap is the point.** Greece prosecuted its dictators thoroughly and still produced, immediately, a movement that took the regime's defeat as its founding grievance. **Accountability for a dictatorship does not by itself dissolve the constituency that wanted one**, which is the counterweight the vault should hold against its own enthusiasm for the Greek junta trials.
## The Record He Never Softened
Unlike every other European far-right leader in this vault, Michaloliakos ran no de-demonization campaign. He published Holocaust denial. He gave the Roman salute in public. He described Golden Dawn as a "Popular Nationalist Movement" while its members marched with torches.
**The comparison is the finding.** [[Marine Le Pen]] expelled her father; [[Gianfranco Fini]] called fascism absolute evil; the AfD litigates its designation. Michaloliakos did none of it — and his party reached 7% and eighteen seats anyway, because in 2012 the Greek electorate was not shopping for reassurance. **De-demonization is a strategy for competing in a functioning system. In a collapsed one it is not required.**
## Conviction
Convicted on **7 October 2020** of directing a criminal organization and sentenced to **13 years**. He was granted conditional release on health grounds in 2023; the release was overturned in June 2024 and he returned to custody.
On **4 March 2026** the appeal court upheld the conviction, and sentencing that month left the 13 years standing, with most pleas in mitigation rejected.
