# Nancy Pelosi U.S. Representative from California's 11th district (San Francisco), serving since 1987. The first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, holding the gavel during 2007–2011 and 2019–2023. Daughter of Baltimore mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr.; married to financier Paul Pelosi. ## The two impeachments Pelosi was Speaker of the House during both Trump impeachments and made the determinative decisions in each: **[[Trump First Impeachment]]**: Pelosi resisted impeachment calls through the Mueller period (2017–2019), arguing impeachment without bipartisan support would be politically corrosive. Reversed course on September 24, 2019, announcing a formal inquiry within 24 hours of the public emergence of the Ukraine whistleblower complaint. Articles approved December 18, 2019. **[[Trump Second Impeachment]]**: Moved a single article of impeachment ("incitement of insurrection") through the House in seven days following [[January 6 Capitol Attack]]. The 232–197 vote (10 Republicans yes) was the most bipartisan presidential impeachment in U.S. history. Pelosi appointed the impeachment managers in both proceedings: [[Adam Schiff]] as lead in the first; [[Jamie Raskin]] as lead in the second. ## January 6 During the [[January 6 Capitol Attack]], Pelosi was evacuated from the chamber as rioters chanted "Hang [[Mike Pence]]" and breached the Capitol. Footage from her chief of staff's office filmed by her daughter Alexandra Pelosi (released as part of the [[J6 Committee]] record) shows Pelosi coordinating with [[Mitch McConnell]] and Vice President-elect [[Kamala Harris]] to restore order and complete the certification. In October 2022, an intruder attacked Paul Pelosi at the family's San Francisco home with a hammer, fracturing his skull. The attacker had been seeking Nancy Pelosi specifically. The incident was the most direct physical manifestation of the post-J6 violent rhetoric tracked across this KB (see [[Donald Trump - Liz Cheney nine barrels]]). ## Step-down Pelosi declined to seek re-election to the Democratic leadership in November 2022, transferring the role to [[Hakeem Jeffries]]. Continued to serve as a rank-and-file member through 2026. ## Related - [[Trump First Impeachment]] - [[Trump Second Impeachment]] - [[Trump Impeachments Timeline]] - [[January 6 Capitol Attack]] - [[Adam Schiff]] - [[Jamie Raskin]]
