# Mohamed Morsi
Mohamed Morsi (1951–2019) was the [[Muslim Brotherhood]] candidate who won Egypt's first free presidential election in 2012, in the wake of the [[Arab Spring]] and the fall of [[Hosni Mubarak]]. His single year in office was turbulent, and in July 2013 he was deposed in a military coup led by his own defense minister, [[Abdel Fattah el-Sisi]]. Imprisoned after the coup, Morsi died in 2019 after collapsing in a Cairo courtroom — a death rights groups attributed to years of harsh detention conditions.
His removal marks the hinge of Egypt's post-2011 trajectory: a popular uprising against a dictator produced a brief elected Islamist government, which was then replaced by a harsher military dictatorship.
