# Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo **Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo**, known as **Hemedti**, is the commander of Sudan's [[Rapid Support Forces]]. A member of the Rizeigat community of Darfur, he rose through the Janjaweed militias of the Darfur genocide and built the RSF into a paramilitary army in 2013 and a gold empire after seizing Darfur mines in 2017 — a business entwined with the [[Wagner Group]] and [[Meroe Gold]]. He was deputy to [[Abdel Fattah al-Burhan]] in the juntas of 2019 and 2021 before the two went to war in April 2023. On January 7, 2025 the United States determined that the RSF had committed genocide and sanctioned him.
