# Mohamed Bazoum **Mohamed Bazoum** is the elected president of [[Niger]], ousted in the July 26, 2023 coup led by General [[Abdourahamane Tiani]]. Since then he has been held with his wife in a wing of the presidential palace in Niamey, with no visitors except his doctor; his immunity was lifted in 2024 but he has not been tried, and he has refused to resign. His elected term would have ended on April 2, 2026 — his lawyers argue it cannot end while he is unlawfully detained — and the European Parliament demanded his release in March 2026.
