# Mick Mulvaney
Former U.S. Representative (R-SC-5, 2011–2017), Director of the Office of Management and Budget (2017–2020), Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (2017–2018), and **Acting White House Chief of Staff** during the period covering the [[Trump First Impeachment]] (January 2019 – March 2020). Founding member of the [[House Freedom Caucus]] during his House tenure.
## The "get over it" press conference
On October 17, 2019 — at the height of the first-impeachment inquiry into the Ukraine quid pro quo — Mulvaney held a White House briefing-room press conference in which he openly acknowledged that U.S. military aid to Ukraine had been conditioned on the requested investigation, telling reporters: "I have news for everybody: get over it. There's going to be political influence in foreign policy." He later attempted to retract the statement; House Democrats cited it as a contemporaneous admission.
The press conference is one of the cleanest documentary moments of the first impeachment because it captured the quid pro quo — denied by Trump and his outside legal team — being acknowledged by the sitting Acting Chief of Staff in real time.
## Post-J6 departure
Mulvaney had transitioned to a U.S. Special Envoy for Northern Ireland role in March 2020. He resigned from that post on January 7, 2021 — the day after the [[January 6 Capitol Attack]] — telling CNBC that "I can't stay" given the events of January 6.
## Subsequent role
Became a CBS News political commentator in 2022 (a hire that drew internal CBS controversy), later a CNN contributor. Has been periodically critical of Trump while remaining a registered Republican.
