# Mengistu Haile Mariam **Mengistu Haile Mariam** (b. May 21, 1937) is the army officer who led the [[Derg]] — the Marxist-Leninist military junta that deposed Haile Selassie in 1974 — from his seizure of the chairmanship on February 3, 1977, when Chairman Tafari Benti was shot, until he fled Ethiopia in May 1991 as rebel armies reached Addis Ababa. He has lived since in Harare as the guest of Robert Mugabe and of Mugabe's successors; an Ethiopian court convicted him of genocide in absentia on December 12, 2006 and sentenced him to death on May 26, 2008, and Zimbabwe has never extradited him. At 89 he is one of the last living heads of the Cold War's client dictatorships. ## The record - **The [[Red Terror (Ethiopia)]]** (1977–78): the campaign against the Derg's civilian Marxist rivals and anyone denounced as one, with estimates of the dead running from 30,000 to several hundred thousand; families were made to pay for the bullets. Mengistu opened it by smashing bottles of red liquid on a Addis Ababa square. - **The Ogaden War** (1977–78): Somalia's invasion repelled with Soviet arms and Cuban troops — the moment Ethiopia became Moscow's principal African client. - **The [[Ethiopian Famine of 1983-1985]]**: a drought turned into mass death by forced collectivization, resettlement and the use of food as a weapon against the insurgencies in Tigray and Eritrea, with estimates of 500,000 to a million dead. Live Aid raised the money; the regime controlled where it went. The [[Ethiopian History Hub]] carries the verified dates; this page is the person. ## Why he is in the vault Mengistu is in the [[Dictators in World History Hub]] as the type-case of the Marxist military strongman — and as a figure the American right uses two ways. In the 1980s he was the proof-text for the Reagan Doctrine's argument that Soviet clients starved their people; today, in the "communism" register of Trump's 2026 speeches, he is one of the names in the roll that makes the domestic left a foreign enemy. The comparison worth keeping is structural: a revolution captured by its army, a terror justified as counter-terror, a famine denied until a foreign camera crew filmed it, and an exile that outlasted the state that granted it. ## See Also - [[Derg]] · [[Red Terror (Ethiopia)]] · [[Ethiopian Famine of 1983-1985]] · [[Ethiopian History Hub]] - [[Dictators in World History Hub]] · [[Marxism]]
