# Melanie Klein
Austrian-British psychoanalyst who founded **object relations theory** and supplied several of the defense mechanisms the vault's [[Narcissism]] cluster runs on — above all **[[Splitting]]** and **projective identification**. Extending [[Sigmund Freud]] into the earliest months of mental life, Klein described an inner world organized around split "good" and "bad" objects, a model later carried into the clinical understanding of narcissistic and borderline pathology by [[Otto Kernberg]].
In the Right Wing KB she matters as the **origin of the psychology of black-and-white thinking** — the primitive splitting of the world into all-good allies and all-bad enemies that the vault treats as a building block of authoritarian and cultic mentality.
## Why It Matters in This KB
### 1. Splitting: the root of all-or-nothing politics
Klein's concept of [[Splitting]] — the inability to hold good and bad in the same object, so that people and groups are experienced as wholly idealized or wholly persecutory — is one of the vault's most-used psychological primitives. It underwrites the friend/enemy absolutism, demonization, and idealized-leader worship that recur across authoritarian movements. The existing Splitting page traces directly to her 1946 paper.
### 2. Projective identification and the paranoid stance
Klein described **projective identification** — disowning one's own intolerable feelings by attributing them to others and then treating them as the threat. This is a deep structural cousin of the [[DARVO]] and scapegoating dynamics the KB tracks, and of the paranoid style in which a movement projects its own aggression onto an enemy. Her "paranoid-schizoid position" names exactly the mode of mind that organizes around persecution and splitting.
### 3. The bridge from Freud to Kernberg
Klein is the crucial link in the lineage: she took [[Sigmund Freud]]'s drive theory and rebuilt it around **relationships with internalized objects**, and that object-relations turn is what [[Otto Kernberg]] later used to theorize [[Narcissistic Personality Disorder]] and borderline organization as failures to integrate split objects. Without Klein, the vault's whole defense-mechanism vocabulary would have no foundation.
### 4. Contested, foundational, useful
Klein's theories about infancy are speculative and were controversial even within psychoanalysis. The KB uses her not as settled developmental science but for the **enduring descriptive power of splitting and projection** as models of how minds — and movements — divide the world into pure good and pure evil.
