# Matteo Salvini **Born 9 March 1973, Milan.** Leader of the Lega since December 2013, deputy prime minister, and the clearest case in Europe of a politician who peaked, chose wrongly at the peak, and never recovered. ## The Transformation Salvini inherited a **northern separatist party**. Its founding grievance was that Rome and the south were parasitic on Lombardy and Veneto; its historic slogan was independence for "Padania"; its enemy was the Italian state. He kept the party and replaced the enemy. Dropping "Nord" from the name, he converted a regional secessionist movement into a **national-populist party** running on immigration, the euro and Brussels, and took it from 4.1% in 2013 to **34.3% in the 2019 European elections** — the largest share any Italian party had won in a generation. **That conversion is the single most complete rebrand in modern European politics**, and it is worth noting what did *not* have to change: the grievance structure was already built. Only the target moved, from Rome to Brussels and Tunis. ## Interior Minister, 2018–2019 Fourteen months in office produced the closed-ports policy, the *decreti sicurezza*, and a sustained confrontation with NGO rescue vessels. The **Open Arms** case — 147 people held aboard a rescue ship off Lampedusa in August 2019 — became the test. He was acquitted at first instance in **December 2024**, prosecutors appealed, and the **Court of Cassation made the acquittal final in December 2025**. **The acquittal is a fact the vault should carry accurately and without editorial comfort**, because it is exactly the shape of case where the temptation to report the charge and forget the verdict is strongest. The judgment held that the conduct did not constitute the crime charged. ## The Papeete Miscalculation In August 2019, polling above 30%, Salvini pulled the Lega out of government from a beach club in Romagna expecting to force elections and become prime minister. Instead the Five Star Movement made a coalition with the centre-left, he was locked out, and the party has never seen those numbers again. **The lesson is generalizable and brutal: in a parliamentary system a peak in the polls is not a mandate, and the actor who dissolves a coalition rarely inherits it.** ## Now The Lega sits at **5.9%** in the 25 August 2026 average — behind [[Roberto Vannacci]]'s Futuro Nazionale, the party formed by the man Salvini himself recruited as a star candidate in 2024, taking seven Lega parliamentarians with him. Regional leaders, Luca Zaia foremost, are publicly demanding a change of direction. Salvini remains the most Moscow-sympathetic figure in the Italian government, and the most consistently to Meloni's right on Ukraine — which is precisely the ground Vannacci is now taking from him. **He is the cautionary half of the Italian story**: the man who did the conversion, reached the summit first, and was overtaken from both directions — by a rival who governed instead of grandstanding, and by a rival who out-grandstanded him. ## See Also - [[Giorgia Meloni]] · [[Roberto Vannacci]] · [[Brothers of Italy]] · [[Silvio Berlusconi]] - [[Marine Le Pen]] · [[Viktor Orbán]] · [[Global New Right Network]] · [[Populism]] - [[Italian History Hub]]
