# Masayoshi Son **Masayoshi Son** (b. 1957, Tosu, Japan) is the founder, chairman and CEO of [[SoftBank]] and the financier of the American AI build-out — the man who stood beside [[Donald Trump]] at the White House on January 21, 2025 to announce the $500B [[Stargate Project]], and whose $40B-plus stake makes him [[OpenAI]]'s largest outside investor. Third-generation Korean-Japanese, he built SoftBank from a 1981 software distributor into a telecom, then into the Vision Fund — the $100B vehicle, half of it Saudi money, that defined the 2017–21 venture cycle and produced WeWork. He matters here as the vault's clearest case of a foreign investor buying access with a **headline pledge**, and of the [[Sovereign Wealth Fund]] channel through which Gulf capital reaches American technology. ## The pledge as a method Son's relationship with Trump is a sequence of announcements. In December 2016 he came to Trump Tower with a $50B investment / 50,000-jobs pledge. In December 2024, at Mar-a-Lago, it was $100B, which Trump on the spot asked him to double to $200B. In January 2025 it was Stargate: up to $500B over four years, SoftBank as financial partner alongside OpenAI, [[Oracle Corporation]] and Abu Dhabi's MGX, with Son as chairman. The numbers are commitments of intent, not capital; as of early 2026 roughly $10B had been deployed, at the Abilene, Texas campus, and SoftBank had withdrawn from a $50B bid for the data-center operator Switch. The [[Stargate Project Timeline]] tracks the gap between the announced network (10 GW across Texas, Ohio, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Michigan) and the built one; [[The Quest for 90 Gigawatts]] puts it in the power-demand context. ## The bets The AI position is concentrated and leveraged. SoftBank's ~$30B of the March 2025 OpenAI round was conditioned on OpenAI's restructuring into a for-profit; it participated in the October 2025 secondary, the February 2026 $110B round and the April 2026 $122B round, taking the total past $40B with a further ~$30B reported in the pipeline. [[Arm Holdings]], SoftBank's crown jewel, is the licensing layer under nearly every chip in the buildout; the [[OpenAI-NVIDIA Strategic Partnership]] page shows [[Jensen Huang]]'s side of the same circle. To fund it Son has sold assets — including, in 2019, a 4.9% NVIDIA stake that would now be worth an order of magnitude more, which he has called the mistake of his career — and in 2026 pitched **Project Crystal Land**, a $1 trillion AI-and-robotics manufacturing complex in Arizona with a free-trade zone and TSMC, to [[Howard Lutnick]]'s Commerce Department. [[Boston Dynamics]] is the robotics leg. ## Why the vault cares Son is where three of the vault's threads meet. He is the conduit for Saudi and Emirati money into the AI stack ([[SoftBank]]'s "Saudi pipeline"), which is why the [[Sovereign Wealth Fund]] page names him. He is the model of access-by-announcement that other foreign investors have copied — the pledge is the price of a White House photograph, and the photograph is the asset. And his structure is the buildout's stress point: a single investor, financing a single lab's compute at eleven-figure valuations, with borrowed money, on the assumption that the demand curve on [[Stargate Project Timeline]] materializes. If it does not, the [[Gannett - GateHouse Merger]] page's comparison — a roll-up that outran its market — is the one the vault would reach for. ## See Also - [[SoftBank]] · [[Stargate Project]] · [[Stargate Project Timeline]] · [[OpenAI]] · [[Arm Holdings]] · [[Boston Dynamics]] - [[Donald Trump]] · [[Larry Ellison]] · [[Sam Altman]] · [[Jensen Huang]] · [[Howard Lutnick]] · [[Travis Kalanick]] - [[Sovereign Wealth Fund]] · [[OpenAI-NVIDIA Strategic Partnership]] · [[The Quest for 90 Gigawatts]] · [[Oracle Corporation]]
