# Mark Driscoll
**Mark Driscoll** is the pastor who built Mars Hill Church in Seattle from a living-room Bible study (1996) into a fifteen-campus, 13,000-attendee megachurch on hyper-masculine, hard-complementarian Reformed theology — "the cussing pastor," the face of the 2000s "young, restless, Reformed" movement — and who resigned in October 2014 as the church collapsed under findings of plagiarism, a $210,000 scheme to buy his book onto the *New York Times* list, bullying and what the church's own elders called a "domineering" and "arrogant" pattern of leadership. Mars Hill dissolved within months. He resurfaced in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2016 with The Trinity Church, which now reports more than 5,000 weekly attendees and in January 2026 paid $15.5 million for a 116,000-square-foot office complex to expand into; former members describe mandated staff loyalty and surveillance of congregants.
## Why he matters here
Driscoll is the type-case for the fusion of conservative theology with aggressive gender politics and a personality cult — the pastor-as-alpha whose reading of 1 Timothy 2 held that women are barred from leadership because they are "more gullible and easier to deceive than men" (see the receipt at [[Mark Driscoll - gullible and easier to deceive]]). The *Rise and Fall of Mars Hill* podcast (2021) made his story the evangelical world's reckoning with celebrity; the fact that the reckoning changed nothing — the same man, the same theology, a bigger building — is the vault's point. He is the bridge between the [[Christian Right]]'s institutional wing and the online manosphere that borrows its vocabulary, and a reference for the [[Narcissism and Religious Authoritarianism]] pages.
