# Marc Benioff
Co-founder, chairman, and CEO of **Salesforce** (founded 1999); owner of **TIME Magazine** (since 2018); principal of **TIME Ventures**, his personal investment vehicle. Benioff sits in an unusual position in the KB: he is one of the few major Silicon Valley billionaires who is **neither a pure Thiel-network ally nor a clean Trump-resistance figure**, and his public posture across 2025–2026 has been a study in elite accommodation to the new political reality without fully crossing into the camp of Musk, Andreessen, or Sacks.
## The Trump Pivot (2024–2026)
Benioff was a major **[[Hillary Clinton]]** donor in 2016, a vocal advocate for raising business taxes (he backed San Francisco's Prop C in 2018 to tax large companies for homelessness services, putting him on the opposite side of [[Jack Dorsey]] and most of the SF tech industry), and through the first Trump term spoke out repeatedly against the administration's immigration and climate positions.
That posture shifted after the November 2024 election. Benioff's stated framing — "I feel that when we elect a new politician we have to absolutely support them — this is our president now" — is the canonical text of **post-2024 elite accommodation**. He did not publicly say who he voted for. He did not attend the January 2025 inauguration (he was 4,000 miles away in Davos at the World Economic Forum), which was widely read as a deliberate signal. But over the following year:
- He **defended supporting Trump** publicly when challenged.
- He attended the **November 2025 White House dinner for Mohammed bin Salman** ([[Mohammed bin Salman]]), posting a series of selfies from the event — an unusually performative show of presence at a function many SF executives skipped.
- His Washington Post profile (Nov 2025) — "The billionaire tech CEO caught between Trump and San Francisco" — captured the bind: positioned as San Francisco's de facto civic patriarch and largest individual philanthropist, while simultaneously normalizing the second Trump administration.
- **The National Guard episode (Oct 2025).** In a New York Times interview published Oct 10, just before Dreamforce, he said of sending the Guard to San Francisco: "We don't have enough cops, so if they can be cops, I'm all for it." [[Ron Conway]] quit the Salesforce Foundation board over it on Oct 16, and Benioff apologized on X on Oct 17: "I do not believe the National Guard is needed to address safety in San Francisco." On Oct 23 Trump named Benioff, with [[Jensen Huang]], among the "friends" whose calls led him to cancel the surge. In the space of two weeks Benioff both invited the deployment and helped stop it. See [[San Francisco Federal Surge Reversal]].
## TIME Magazine Ownership
Benioff bought TIME from Meredith Corporation in 2018 for $190M, in personal capacity (not through Salesforce). The KB-relevant editorial choices:
- **TIME 2025 Person of the Year: "The Architects of AI"** — a collective designation covering Musk, Zuckerberg, [[Jensen Huang]] (NVIDIA), Sam Altman (OpenAI), Lisa Su (AMD), [[Dario Amodei]] (Anthropic), and a handful of others. Five of the eight were already billionaires with a collective $870B fortune at time of selection. This was the editorial framing that **canonized the AI-billionaire class as the protagonists of the era** — a frame Benioff personally endorsed in interviews around the issue.
- **Davos 2026 "The Truth About AI" essay collection** — Benioff hosted and contributed. His framing: AI is "probably the most important" technological wave of his lifetime; the "agentic enterprise" is the next architectural shift.
The TIME ownership creates an unusual conflict-of-interest dynamic: Benioff is simultaneously a major AI-platform operator (Salesforce's Agentforce), a major investor across AI infrastructure (TIME Ventures), and the owner of one of the magazines that adjudicates the public reputations of his competitors and partners.
## Salesforce and the Agentic Enterprise Bet
At Salesforce's October 2025 Dreamforce conference, Benioff announced **Agentforce** as the company's core AI product line — an enterprise platform for deploying autonomous AI agents that take actions inside customer workflows. By Q1 2026 the company reported 12,000+ customers had adopted Agentforce, including OpenTable, Reddit, and Under Armour. Benioff has framed the agentic-enterprise pivot as a once-in-a-generation rebuild of business software — and as a hedge against the existential threat AI assistants pose to traditional SaaS subscription revenue.
The Agentforce strategy is also a **competitive response to Microsoft's Copilot and OpenAI's enterprise tooling** — Benioff has been publicly skeptical of [[OpenAI]] and [[Sam Altman]], particularly around the question of whether large language models can be commercialized at margin or are doomed to remain capital-destroying loss leaders.
## TIME Ventures — KB-Relevant Investments
TIME Ventures is Benioff's personal venture vehicle (not affiliated with the magazine masthead — the name is shared). Selected KB-relevant positions:
- **[[Panthalassa]] Series B (May 2026)** — Co-invested alongside [[Peter Thiel]], [[John Doerr]], [[Max Levchin]], [[Dylan Field]], and [[Super Micro Computer]] in the $140M wave-powered AI data center round. One of the rare 2026 deals on which Benioff and Thiel sit on the same cap table.
- **OpenAI** — Reported to be a TIME Ventures portfolio company in earlier funding rounds; Benioff's public posture on Altman is nonetheless skeptical-to-hostile.
- Multiple climate-tech positions consistent with Benioff's longstanding ocean-conservation philanthropy.
## Philanthropy
Benioff and his wife Lynne are among the largest individual philanthropists in San Francisco history:
- **UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals** (Oakland and San Francisco) — $200M+ in gifts; naming-rights commitment.
- **Homelessness** — Primary backer of **Prop C** (2018), the gross-receipts tax on large SF companies funding homelessness services. Drew public conflict with [[Jack Dorsey]] and Salesforce's own legal counsel at the time.
- **Ocean conservation** — Multi-decade donor, including major commitments to National Geographic Pristine Seas. Notable in light of the Panthalassa investment, which is the first time his ocean-conservation persona and his AI-infrastructure investing portfolio have visibly merged.
## Why This Page Exists
Benioff is KB-relevant for three reasons:
1. **The accommodation template.** His 2024–2026 pivot is the cleanest case study of how non-MAGA Silicon Valley billionaires are publicly handling the second Trump administration: not full alignment (à la Thiel, Sacks, Andreessen), not open resistance, but a series of carefully calibrated symbolic gestures that preserve commercial and policy access.
2. **The media-billionaire pattern.** With TIME under Benioff, Washington Post under [[Jeff Bezos]] (until 2025 sale rumors), the Atlantic under [[Laurene Powell Jobs]], and LA Times under Patrick Soon-Shiong, the American legacy news magazine and broadsheet ecosystem is now almost entirely owned by tech-fortune billionaires — a structural feature of the post-2024 information environment.
3. **Cap-table proximity to [[the Thiel network]].** The Panthalassa co-investment is the most concrete data point that Benioff is comfortable sitting on the same deal as Thiel — a signal worth tracking as the AI-infrastructure buildout (see [[The Quest for 90 Gigawatts]]) forces strange-bedfellow capital alignments.
