# Lincoln Steffens **Lincoln Steffens** (1866–1936) was the [[Muckraking]] journalist whose *[[McClure's Magazine]]* series on machine politics, collected as *The Shame of the Cities* (1904), set the template for municipal-corruption reporting; he was an editor at McClure's from 1902 to 1906 alongside [[Ida Tarbell]] and Ray Stannard Baker. After visiting Soviet Russia in 1919 with William C. Bullitt he became known for the line "I have seen the future, and it works." His *Autobiography* (1931) was a bestseller.
