# Konstantin Malofeev
**Konstantin Malofeev** (born 1974) is a Russian private-equity financier and media owner known as the "Orthodox oligarch." A monarchist and devout backer of the [[Russian Orthodox Church]], he is one of the principal Kremlin-linked patrons of the transnational religious right, and a recurring figure in [[Dave Troy]]'s "[[The Octopus]]" synthesis as a node where Russian state power, Orthodox traditionalism, and the Western culture war meet.
## Background
Malofeev built his fortune through the private-equity firm Marshall Capital Partners, with investments tied to the state telecom Rostelecom. He went on to found **[[Tsargrad TV]]**, an Orthodox-nationalist, pro-monarchist media channel, and heads the pro-monarchy **Double-Headed Eagle Society**. His worldview casts Russia as the heir to the Roman and Byzantine empires and the last defender of Christian civilization.
## The "conservative internet" idea
In the early 2010s Malofeev argued for building "conservative" alternatives to Google, Facebook, and other Western internet platforms — a vision of an ideologically aligned, sovereign information space. Troy traces a conceptual line from this argument to the American right's later platform-building: [[Rebekah Mercer]]'s funding of [[Parler]] as a "free speech" social network is, in the Octopus reading, the U.S. instantiation of the same impulse. (The connection is thematic and ideational, not a documented financial link.)
## Transnational religious right
Malofeev was a major funder behind Russia's hosting of the [[World Congress of Families]], the U.S.-founded network opposing LGBT rights and abortion. Alongside [[Vladimir Yakunin]] and activist [[Alexey Komov]], he helped pull the WCF orbit toward Moscow and underwrote the Russian "traditional values" agenda.
## Sanctions and war
Malofeev was placed under U.S. and EU sanctions in 2014 over his role in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where he was linked to funding pro-Russian separatists. In April 2022 the U.S. indicted him for conspiring to evade those sanctions by financing pro-Russian media. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine he has continued to bankroll the war effort and ultranationalist causes.
