# Kimbal Musk **Kimbal Musk** (born 1972) is the younger brother of [[Elon Musk]], a [[Tesla]] director since April 2004, and the longest-serving member of the family core in the [[Elon Musk Inner Circle]]. He co-founded Zip2 with Elon in 1995; it sold to Compaq in 1999 for about $307 million and gave both brothers their first fortune. Since then he has built a parallel career in food: restaurants, school gardens and urban farming. ## Boards - **Tesla:** since April 2004. He sat on the board through the votes on Elon's pay, including the roughly $1 trillion package shareholders approved on November 6, 2025. - **SpaceX:** a director from 2002 until **January 2022** (Tesla's filings). He is no longer on the board, though Wikipedia still says he is. - **Chipotle:** 2013–19. - **Burning Man Project:** left the board in early 2026 after criticism over his appearances in the Epstein files (he is named in more than 100 emails; he says he met [[Jeffrey Epstein]] once). ## Tesla stock As an insider his sales are public: about 75,000 shares (about $27M) in February 2025, and 56,820 shares (about $25.6M) on December 9, 2025, when he also gave 15,242 shares to a donor-advised fund. That left him about 1.38 million shares held directly. Sales in 2026 were not checked. ## Food He founded **The Kitchen** restaurants in Boulder, the **Big Green** school-garden nonprofit (executive director since 2010) and **Square Roots** urban farms (2016). A 5280 Magazine report dated October 6, 2026 says he and co-founder Hugo Matheson have sold the Boulder and Denver Kitchen restaurants to restaurateur Bryan Dayton (one source). ## The tariff break On April 8, 2025 he publicly broke with Trump's trade policy, calling tariffs "a structural, permanent tax on the American consumer" and Trump "the most high-tax American President in generations."
