# Kevin Kiley
Member of the U.S. House from California, elected as a Republican in 2022 from CA-03 after service in the State Assembly.
[[Proposition 50 (California)]] absorbed Democratic Sacramento territory into his district, turning a Trump +3 seat into one Harris would have carried by double digits. **In early March 2026 he left the Republican Party and filed as an independent**, and is running in the **6th** district against Democrat Richard Pan rather than defending the redrawn 3rd. In that 3rd, Democrat Ami Bera and Republican Robb Tucker advanced from the June 2026 primary.
⭐ He is the clearest individual illustration of what a mid-decade partisan remap does to incumbents who are neither safe nor easily relocated: the available moves were to lose, to retire, or to leave the party.
*Stub — expand with: the Assembly record, the 2021 Newsom recall campaign, the party-switch rationale in his own words, and the 2026 general result.*
