# Ken Calvert
## Summary
U.S. Representative from California's 41st Congressional District (Riverside County / Palm Springs area) since January 1993. **17 terms / 33 years.** **Dean of the California GOP House delegation.** **Chairman, House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense** since 2024. In 2024 he defeated Will Rollins 51.3%–48.7% in a district Harris **carried** overall. After **California Proposition 50** (approved by voters 2025-11-04) redrew CA-41 into a **Harris +12–14** district, Calvert **announced he is NOT running in CA-41 and is relocating to run in the neighboring, still-R-leaning CA-40** — setting up an R-on-R 2026 contest with Young Kim. This makes CA-41 effectively an **open-seat Democratic pickup** (see [[CA-41-2026]]).
## Career highlights
- First elected 1992; sworn in January 1993
- 17 consecutive House terms (longest-serving CA Republican)
- [[House Appropriations Committee]] member since 2009
- Defense Appropriations Subcommittee member since 2011
- **Chair, Defense Appropriations Subcommittee** (~$822B jurisdiction) since 2024
- Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee member
- Long record anchoring defense contracting and federal infrastructure to the Inland Empire (March Air Reserve Base modernization, regional projects, veterans' facilities)
- 2024 reelection: 51.3% vs. Will Rollins 48.7% (+2.6) — in a Harris-carried district
- 2025-11-04: Prop 50 approved; CA-41 redrawn from R+2 to Harris +12–14
- 2025-11-05: Calvert announces CA-40 run (not CA-41)
## Congressional profile
Dean of California Republicans. Appropriations power center. Has built personal-brand insulation via earmarks and constituent services — enough to win Harris-carried CA-41 in 2024 by nearly 3 points. With Prop 50's redraw, the structural math no longer supports holding CA-41, so he relocated to CA-40, which retains R lean.
## 2026 race
**Primary 2026 race**: See [[CA-40-2026]] (TBD) — R-on-R with Young Kim. Both are incumbents with strong profiles; Calvert brings seniority and Defense Appropriations chairmanship; Kim brings suburban-moderate brand and Orange County base.
**Prior race / now open**: See [[CA-41-2026]] — becomes an open Democratic pickup opportunity with a fragmented D field ([[Brandon Riker]], Abel Chavez, Dave Karson, Jason Byors, Ferguson Porter) and a sole Republican ([[Cody Wiebelhaus]]) with a pro-LGBTQ+ platform. California top-two primary 2026-06-02.
