# Karl Pearson
**Karl Pearson** (1857–1936) was the British statistician who turned [[Francis Galton]]'s eugenics into a quantitative research program. He founded UCL's Department of Applied Statistics in 1911, the first university statistics department in the world, became the first Galton Professor of Eugenics under Galton's bequest, co-founded *Biometrika* (1901) and founded the *Annals of Eugenics* (1925). His work on correlation, regression and significance testing is foundational to modern statistics; he remained an ardent eugenicist and voiced enthusiasm for Germany's eugenic policies as late as 1933. In June 2020 UCL removed his name from the Pearson Building and the Pearson Lecture Theatre.
