# Judea Pearl
**Stub.** Judea Pearl (b. 1936) is an Israeli-American computer scientist who won the 2011 Turing Award for foundational work on probabilistic ("Bayesian") reasoning and, especially, the formal theory of **causality** — the mathematics of cause-and-effect inference. His critique that modern [[Machine Learning]] is mere "curve fitting" that cannot reason about causation is influential among those who argue today's AI lacks genuine understanding. (He is also the father of journalist Daniel Pearl, murdered by terrorists in 2002.)
