# Josh Marshall
**Josh Marshall** (born February 15, 1969, St. Louis) is the founder and editor-in-chief of [[Talking Points Memo]], which he started as a one-man blog during the 2000 Florida recount ([[Bush v. Gore]]) and built into a membership-funded newsroom. He is in this vault for two reasons. As a **source stream**, TPM's reporting is cited across several pages. As an **analyst**, he coined the vault's [[Authoritarian International]] frame.
## The journalist
Marshall holds a BA from Princeton and an MA and PhD in American history from Brown. In the mid-1990s he designed websites for law firms and published an online news site about internet law. He then joined *The American Prospect* as associate editor (1997–2000) and Washington editor (1999–2001), while freelancing for *The Washington Monthly*, *The Atlantic*, *The New Yorker*, Salon and the *New York Post*. He got into journalism by writing, not through journalism school.
TPM's early reputation came from sustained, reader-assisted digging after other outlets had moved on:
- **2002:** kept [[Trent Lott]]'s praise of Strom Thurmond's segregationist 1948 campaign in the news until Lott stepped down as Senate Republican leader.
- **2006–07:** drove coverage of the firing of U.S. attorneys, which ended with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's resignation. That reporting won the George Polk Award for Legal Reporting — the first Polk for an online-only outlet.
Marshall describes TPM as "a bloid for smart people": a tabloid's punchy headlines combined with a serious claim on the reader's attention.
## The Authoritarian International
On February 11, 2026, Marshall argued that even as Trump's grip on public opinion slips, the larger problem is a global authoritarian movement that Trump fronts but did not create and will not end. He listed seven blocs — authoritarian governments, Gulf monarchies, European right-revanchist governments, Silicon Valley's right wing, the Israeli private intelligence sector, post-Soviet oligarchs and the global billionaire class — joined by an anti-civic operating system of private deals, secrecy and mutual leverage. A follow-up the next day connected the frame to [[Kompromat]]. The full analysis, roster and vault cross-reference are on [[Authoritarian International]].
## Filing note
[[Heather Cox Richardson]] and [[Judd Legum]] each have a single person page, with their publication carried as an alias, because each is a one-person publication. TPM is different: a staffed newsroom with its own reporters (Hunter Walker's reporting is cited on [[Jack Smith]] and [[Eric Schmitt]]). So TPM has its own page, [[Talking Points Memo]], and this page covers Marshall himself.
