# Josephus Daniels
Publisher of Raleigh's *News & Observer* and the propaganda engine of North Carolina's 1898 and 1900 white supremacy campaigns. Daniels turned the state's largest newspaper into what he later called "the militant voice of [[White Supremacy]]," running a daily diet of fabricated and exaggerated "negro domination" stories and Norman Jennett's racist front-page cartoons in the months before the [[Wilmington Coup of 1898]]. He is an essential early case study in coordinated media-political disinformation: the campaign was planned jointly with party chair [[Furnifold Simmons]], with the press, party machine, and [[Red Shirts]] paramilitaries operating as one apparatus. Daniels went on to a long establishment career — Navy Secretary under Wilson (with FDR as his assistant) and FDR's ambassador to Mexico — and his descendants ran the *News & Observer* until 1995; the paper formally apologized for its 1898 role in 2006.
*Stub — expand with: 1900 suffrage-amendment campaign, Jennett cartoons, later career, family/paper reckoning.*
