# John Mitchell
**John N. Mitchell** (1913–1988) was [[Richard Nixon]]'s law partner, 1968 campaign manager and Attorney General (1969–72), who left the Justice Department to run the 1972 re-election committee and approved the Watergate break-in from that chair. Convicted in 1975 of conspiracy, obstruction and perjury, he served nineteen months — the only Attorney General ever imprisoned. He is the pre-Watergate model of the office: the President's political intimate running the nation's law enforcement, the arrangement the post-1973 norms were written to prevent. See [[Attorney General]] and [[Saturday Night Massacre]].
