# John James **John James** is the **Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan in 2026** and a two-term U.S. Representative from Michigan's 10th district (Macomb County, since 2023). He is a West Point graduate, a former Army Apache pilot who flew in Iraq, and an executive in his family's Detroit-area logistics business. ## Career - **2018** Republican nominee for U.S. Senate; lost to Debbie Stabenow. - **2020** Republican nominee for U.S. Senate; lost narrowly to Gary Peters. - **2022** won the new MI-10 by about 1,600 votes; re-elected in 2024. ## The 2026 race James announced his run for governor in April 2025. That left MI-10 open, reportedly to Trump's displeasure, and turned it into a top House battleground: see [[MI-10-2026]], where Christina Hines (D) faces Michael Bouchard Jr. (R). On **August 4, 2026** James won the Republican primary with **50.1%** over self-funding businessman Perry Johnson, with former Attorney General Mike Cox third. His running mate is state Rep. Jay DeBoyer. He faces Secretary of State [[Jocelyn Benson]] in a two-way race, after former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan ended his independent run in May. September polling averages had James trailing by about 7 points. No Republican has won a Michigan governor's race since 2014. ## Why he matters here James is the Michigan test of whether a Trump-aligned but conventional Republican can win a statewide race in a state Trump carried in 2024. His strength in Macomb County, the home of the "Reagan Democrats," makes the race an indicator for the 2028 map. ## See also - [[Jocelyn Benson]] · [[MI-10-2026]] · [[Christina Hines]] · [[Michael Bouchard Jr.]] - [[2026 House Races Hub]] · [[2026 Governor Races Hub]] · [[JD Vance News Log]]
