# John Boehner
**John Boehner** (b. 1949) was Speaker of the U.S. House from 2011 to 2015 and an Ohio congressman from 1991. He is in this vault as the **first establishment Republican leader destroyed by his own party's insurgent wing** — driven from the speakership in 2015 by the Freedom Caucus, the [[Tea Party Movement]]'s congressional expression, after repeated shutdown and debt-ceiling confrontations he could neither win nor prevent.
The pattern he established is the one [[Paul Ryan]] then repeated: a leader whose authority depends on a coalition that has concluded governing is itself the betrayal. Boehner has been unusually blunt about it since leaving, describing much of the caucus that replaced him in terms no sitting member would use.
