# Jeff Landry Governor of Louisiana since January 2024 (b. 1970); before that the state's attorney general (2016–24), a one-term congressman elected in the 2010 Tea Party wave, a sheriff's deputy and a National Guardsman. He won the 2023 governor's race outright in the October primary, with [[Donald Trump]]'s endorsement, and has governed as the most complete state-level expression of the second-term program the vault tracks — which is why nine folders link to him. ## The program **Church and state.** In June 2024 he signed H.B. 71, requiring the Ten Commandments in every public-school classroom — a statute written to track the Kentucky law struck down in *[[Stone v. Graham]]* (1980) and to invite the Supreme Court to overrule it. A district judge enjoined it in November 2024 and a Fifth Circuit panel affirmed in June 2025; the full Fifth Circuit then vacated the injunction 12–6 on February 20, 2026 as premature, leaving the law to take effect and the challenge to be refiled as applied. Attorney General [[Liz Murrill]], his former solicitor general, defends it. The [[Christian Nationalism Ecosystem]] page treats it as the model bill for the movement; [[Ten Commandments]] has the display fight's history. **Force.** In September 2025 he asked [[Pete Hegseth]] to fund 1,000 Louisiana Guard troops for city policing; the President authorized 350 for New Orleans in December 2025, in a city that had just recorded its fewest killings since the early 1970s. [[National Guard Federalization Flow]] shows the mechanism; Landry is one of the two governors who asked. **Maps.** After *[[Louisiana v. Callais]]* — the Supreme Court's 2026 decision gutting the Voting Rights Act's protection of majority-Black districts — Landry suspended the state's May 16 congressional primary after voting had begun so that the legislature could redraw the map to eliminate one or both such districts. [[Redistricting Timeline 2025-2026]] carries the sequence, and [[Louisiana Authoritarian Package 2025-2026]] argues that the three moves together — militarize the city, cancel the election mid-vote, redraw the map — are a single case study in state-level consolidation when the federal backstops are gone. **Business.** The same term produced [[Starbase Louisiana]], the SpaceX expansion courted through [[Louisiana Economic Development]] with [[Ken Howery]] in the middle ([[SpaceX Watch Log]]), and an insurance-and-tort agenda that pitted him against the trial bar. Landry's crime program — adult prosecution at 17, expanded death-penalty methods, a special session in 2024 — was the first act; the rest followed. See [[US Governors Hub]] for how he compares to the other governors in the file. ## See Also - [[Louisiana Authoritarian Package 2025-2026]] · [[Louisiana v.
