# Javier Milei
The libertarian wildcard of the international new right — Argentina's 59th president (inaugurated December 2023), a former television pundit and economics professor who ran for office brandishing a chainsaw, promising to abolish the central bank, and calling himself an "anarcho-capitalist." Milei represents a distinct strain within the global new right: not the nationalist-authoritarian model of Orbán or the post-fascist pragmatism of Meloni, but a radical **libertarian-populist** hybrid that combines Rothbardian economics with meme-culture political communication and evangelical-adjacent cultural conservatism.
Steve Bannon called Argentina under Milei "the tip of the tip of the spear" for the "Judeo-Christian West." Milei himself declared at CPAC Buenos Aires: "We could call ourselves a right-wing international."
## The Chainsaw Economics
Milei's signature is literal and metaphorical: he gifted [[Elon Musk]] a replica chainsaw etched with his motto "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!" ("Long live freedom, dammit!"). The chainsaw symbolizes his promise to cut the Argentine state down to size.
**Key economic actions:**
- Eliminated 13 of 21 government ministries
- Devalued the peso by 54% on inauguration
- Cut subsidies for energy, transport, and utilities
- Froze public sector hiring and wages
- Pursued privatization of state enterprises
- Deregulated sectors of the economy through "mega-decree" of 300+ provisions
**Results through early 2026:**
| Metric | Pre-Milei | Post-Milei | Assessment |
|--------|-----------|------------|------------|
| **Inflation (annual)** | 160.9% (Nov 2023); peaked at 289.4% (Apr 2024) | ~56% (March 2025) | Dramatic decline |
| **Monthly inflation** | 25%+ (Dec 2023) | 2.2% (Jan 2025) | Five-year low |
| **Poverty rate** | 40% (baseline) | 57% (Q2 2024) → 38% (Q3 2024) | Spiked then partially recovered |
| **GDP** | Contracting | Modest recovery late 2024 | Mixed |
The inflation reduction is real and significant. The human cost — a poverty spike to 57% before partial recovery — is also real. Milei's defenders cite the inflation numbers; his critics cite the poverty numbers. Both are accurate.
## CPAC Circuit and Global New Right Integration
CPAC moved its 2024 conference to Buenos Aires — elevating Milei to the same status as Orbán within the global conservative circuit. Milei has become a regular at international right-wing events:
- **CPAC Buenos Aires (2024)**: Headlined alongside Bannon allies and international new right figures
- **Davos (2024)**: Delivered a speech attacking collectivism and the "woke virus"
- **Israel visit**: Early foreign trip signaling alignment with the pro-Israel consensus of the global new right
- **Elon Musk relationship**: The chainsaw gift, mutual praise, shared anti-regulation ideology
## The Crypto Connection
Milei's presidency intersected directly with the crypto-political ecosystem documented elsewhere in this KB:
- **February 2025**: Milei publicly endorsed the **$LIBRA memecoin** on social media, which promptly crashed, wiping out millions in retail investor value
- The coin was connected to **[[Kelsier Ventures]]** and operator **[[Hayden Davis]]**
- The scandal triggered congressional investigations and a potential impeachment inquiry
- It illustrated the vulnerability of populist leaders to crypto grifters who exploit political access
## Analytical Framework
Milei is significant for the global new right as an **alternative template** — proof that the radical libertarian variant of right-wing populism can win elections in crisis conditions. His model differs from every other leader in this section:
| Leader | Model |
|--------|-------|
| **Orbán** | Nationalist-authoritarian, state capture |
| **Meloni** | Post-fascist pragmatist, EU integration |
| **Le Pen** | De-demonized ethno-nationalism |
| **Bolsonaro** | Military-evangelical, insurrection |
| **Farage** | Sovereignty populism, anti-EU |
| **Milei** | Libertarian-populist, chainsaw austerity |
The question Milei raises for the global new right: can radical austerity maintain populist support, or does the poverty spike it produces eventually destroy the coalition? Argentina is the test case, and the answer isn't in yet.
## The US Treasury lifeline (2025)
Ahead of Argentina's October 26, 2025 midterms, Treasury Secretary [[Scott Bessent]] put the [[Exchange Stabilization Fund]] behind Milei's government: a $20 billion swap agreement with Argentina's central bank, dated October 18, 2025, plus direct Treasury purchases of pesos. Only $2.5 billion was ever drawn, and Treasury's own ledger records it as fully repaid in December 2025; Bessent announced the repayment on January 9, 2026. Trump had openly tied the support to the election outcome. It is the clearest recent case of the US using its dollar lifelines to back a political ally abroad, with no vote in Congress.
