# Janet Yellen **Status: stub — expand.** Economist who chaired the [[Federal Reserve]] from **February 3, 2014 to February 3, 2018** — the first woman to hold the job — after serving as Fed vice chair and, before that, president of the San Francisco Fed. She later served as [[Joe Biden]]'s Treasury Secretary (2021–2025), the first person to have led the Fed, the Treasury and the Council of Economic Advisers. Her chairmanship ended the zero-rate era: the December 16, 2015 hike was the first since 2006. As a candidate in September 2016, [[Donald Trump]] said the Fed was "very political," that its low rates had created a "false stock market," and that Yellen "should be ashamed." In November 2017 he named [[Jerome Powell]] instead of reappointing her — the first chair since [[Arthur Burns]] not given a second term. Three years after accusing her of keeping rates low for Obama, Trump was demanding rates of "ZERO, or less." ## See also - [[Interest Rate Policy Timeline]] · [[ZIRP]] · [[Central Bank Independence]] · [[New Keynesian Economics]]
