# Jaime Herrera Beutler Republican U.S. Representative for southwest Washington's 3rd district (2011–2023). She was one of the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after January 6. She was also the only one whose testimony nearly changed the Senate trial. ## The second impeachment and the McCarthy call Herrera Beutler voted against both articles in the [[Trump First Impeachment]] (December 2019) and for the single article in the [[Trump Second Impeachment]] (January 13, 2021). Her public account of a phone call during the attack put that call into the trial record. [[Kevin McCarthy]] had urged Trump to call off the rioters, and Trump replied, "Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are." On February 13, 2021, that account led the Senate to vote **55–45 to allow witnesses**, the only time in either Trump trial that witnesses were authorized. Within hours the two sides agreed instead to enter her statement into the record and call no one, and the Senate acquitted that afternoon. ## Loss of the seat In the August 2022 Washington top-two primary (see [[Jungle Primary]]) she finished third. The Trump-endorsed [[Joe Kent]] and Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez advanced, and she conceded on August 9. Gluesenkamp Perez then beat Kent in November, flipping a seat Herrera Beutler had held for six terms. In 2024 she ran for Washington Commissioner of Public Lands, advanced through the top-two primary, and lost the November 5 general to Democrat Dave Upthegrove with about 47%. ## KB significance Her race is the cleanest example of the purge costing the party the seat. The defector was removed in a primary, the loyalist who replaced her on the ballot lost the general, and the district changed parties. See the defector pattern on [[Trump Impeachments Timeline]]. ## Related - [[Trump Second Impeachment]] - [[Trump Impeachments Timeline]] - [[Joe Kent]] - [[Kevin McCarthy]]
