# Hunter Biden
**Robert Hunter Biden** is an American lawyer and businessman, the second son of [[Joe Biden]]. He matters to this knowledge base in two distinct capacities that are constantly conflated, and the entire value of this page is in keeping them apart:
1. **A man who committed federal crimes, was convicted of them, and was pardoned by his father.** All of that is real and adjudicated.
2. **A narrative object** — the organizing figure of a decade-long corruption theory about his father that produced a laptop story, a congressional impeachment inquiry, and a fabricated bribery allegation, and that never established the thing it set out to establish.
Treating either as the whole story gets the subject wrong.
## The actual legal record
| Date | Matter | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| June 11, 2024 | Federal gun charges, D. Del. — lying on a federal firearms form about drug use when buying a revolver in 2018 | **Convicted by a jury** on three felony counts |
| Sept. 5, 2024 | Federal tax charges, C.D. Cal. — a scheme to avoid at least **$1.4 million** in taxes | **Pleaded guilty**, avoiding trial |
| Dec. 1, 2024 | Presidential pardon | **Full and unconditional**, before sentencing in either case |
Both prosecutions were brought by **[[David Weiss]]**, a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney elevated to [[Special Counsel]] by [[Merrick Garland]]. Hunter Biden faced statutory maximums of 25 years on the gun counts and 17 on the tax counts; he served no time.
## The pardon
The pardon is the part with structural consequences, and it is worse than "a father helped his son."
**It was categorically ruled out, twice, in public.** In June 2024, as the Delaware trial proceeded, Joe Biden told reporters: "I abide by the jury decision. I will not pardon him." On **November 8, 2024** — five days after the election — the White House press secretary was asked again and said the answer "stands, which is no." The pardon came three weeks later.
**It was not limited to the convictions.** The grant covers any offenses against the United States that Hunter Biden "has committed or may have committed or taken part in" between **January 1, 2014 and December 1, 2024** — a decade-wide prospective immunity, beginning conveniently in the year he joined the Burisma board.
**The justification attacked the prosecutor.** Biden called the cases "raw politics." Weiss answered in his final report, released January 2025, calling the prosecutions "the culmination of thorough, impartial investigations" — a Trump-appointed prosecutor defending his own integrity against a Democratic president, which is not the alignment the surrounding narrative predicts.
The pardon drew bipartisan criticism, and it is now a standing citation in defenses of subsequent executive clemency. That is its main function in this vault: whatever the merits of any given pardon, this one removed a Democratic argument from the field.
## The narrative object
Hunter Biden's business career — the [[Burisma]] board seat he held from **2014 to 2019** while his father was vice president, and ventures with partners including [[Devon Archer]] and [[Jason Galanis]], both later convicted in an unrelated tribal-bond fraud — supplied the raw material for a corruption theory about *Joe* Biden.
The theory's construction is traceable:
- **[[Peter Schweizer]]** and the **[[Government Accountability Institute]]** surfaced the Burisma connection in *Secret Empires* (2018), seeding the frame.
- It became an instrument of the **[[Trump-Ukraine Scandal]]** in 2019, when Trump pressed Ukraine's president to announce an investigation into the Bidens.
- The **[[Hunter Biden Laptop]]** story landed in October 2020, days before the election, and the fight over its suppression later became a load-bearing element of the [[Twitter Files]].
- [[Ron Johnson]] ran a Hunter Biden investigation out of the [[Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee]] in 2020, timed to the campaign, whose report drew on channels tied to Russian intelligence.
- [[James Comer]] and the [[House Oversight Committee]] carried it into a formal impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden.
**It ended without charges against Joe Biden, and its central factual claim was a fabrication.** The specific allegation — that Burisma executives paid Joe and Hunter Biden $5 million each — came from FBI informant **Alexander Smirnov**, was memorialized in an FBI form that became the impeachment inquiry's marquee evidence, and was **invented**. Smirnov pleaded guilty on December 16, 2024 and was sentenced to **six years in prison**. The prosecutor who charged him was David Weiss — the same one who convicted Hunter Biden.
> [!warning] What this page does and does not say
> That the bribery claim was fabricated does not mean Hunter Biden's Burisma seat was innocuous; trading on a family name is a real thing and the vault treats it as such under [[Nepotism]]. It means the specific $5 million allegation was manufactured and adjudicated as such. Both halves are load-bearing. Do not let this page slide into either "nothing happened" or "it was all true."
## Why it matters here
**The same prosecutor produced both results, which is the fact that breaks the frame.** Weiss convicted the president's son and imprisoned the informant who lied about the president. If the Justice Department were the partisan instrument each side alleged, one of those two outcomes should not exist.
**The theory outlived its own evidence, which is the pattern.** The fabricated allegation collapsed in December 2024. "Biden crime family" did not, because it had long since stopped depending on the claim — the same durability the vault documents in [[Uranium One]], where a deflection narrative ran for years without an evidentiary basis. The Hunter Biden case is the better teaching example precisely because there *was* a real underlying offense: a genuine conviction sat at the center, which let the surrounding invention borrow its credibility.
