# Heather Cox Richardson **Heather Cox Richardson** (b. 1962) is the Boston College historian of nineteenth-century American politics whose nightly newsletter, *Letters from an American*, became the most-read political publication on [[Substack]] — about 2.9 million subscribers on the platform and nearly 7 million followers across Substack and Facebook by August 2026, free to read and funded by voluntary paid subscriptions estimated at more than $5M a year. She is in this vault twice over: as a **subject** — the vault's model of the historian-as-daily-chronicler and of the newsletter as a media form — and as a **source stream**, since the vault's HCR integration workflow reads each letter for entities, events and quotes, which is why seven Quotes pages and every recent Events page cite her. ## The historian Harvard PhD; author of seven books on the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Republican Party's transformations — *How the South Won the Civil War* (2020), which argues that the oligarchic ideology of the Confederacy survived defeat by migrating west, and *Democracy Awakening* (2023), a reading of the present as a contest over whether the Declaration's premise applies to everyone. Her scholarly through-line is the vault's own: that American history is a recurring struggle between a small group insisting on hierarchy and a majority insisting on equality, and that the Reconstruction settlement's overthrow ([[Reconstruction and Its Overthrow]]) is the template for how such contests are lost. ## The letters The newsletter began on **September 15, 2019** as a Facebook post written after a six-week summer hiatus — a survey of Trump's stonewalling of investigations, court-stacking, and use of the government to help his 2020 reelection, hung on [[Adam Schiff]]'s September 13 demand that Acting DNI [[Joseph Maguire]] hand over the whistleblower complaint he was withholding. Quoting that first post back on its seventh anniversary, she reproduced its thesis: "This is the story of a dictator on the rise, taking control of formerly independent branches of government, and using the power of his office to amass power." Readers swamped her with questions, she wrote another post to answer them, and the series became a nightly letter situating each day's news in the historical pattern she studies. The form — a professional historian writing at midnight, without editors, with footnotes, to millions — is the [[Substack Timeline]]'s clearest case of a subject-matter authority displacing the columnist, and the [[Media Hub]] treats it as a new genre. By 2026 it had grown a staff, daily audio, podcasts, a weekly video with Joanne Freeman, a twice-weekly *Politics Chat*, and a semiquincentennial series of 250 one-minute videos. ## In this vault The letters are the vault's primary daily feed on the [[Second Trump Administration]]: the HCR integration pipeline parses each one, verifies its claims against two other sources, and builds or corrects pages accordingly — and the record of that process shows both the value and the limits of the source. She is unusually reliable on chronology and on which document matters, and she reproduces the errors of her own sources (a wrong executive-order number, a compressed quotation, a cash-on-hand figure read as spending), which is why the vault's rule is that her letter identifies the story and never settles the fact. Her June 26, 2026 letter describing the Republican Party as "a party of radical extremists" is the quotation most often cited from her; her statements about [[Zohran Mamdani]], [[Bernie Moreno]], [[Nancy Mace]], [[Max Miller]] and [[Jared Kushner]] appear on those pages. ## See Also - [[Substack]] · [[Substack Timeline]] · [[Media Hub]] · [[Second Trump Administration]] - [[Reconstruction and Its Overthrow]] · [[The Lost Cause]] · [[Republican Party]] - [[Trump Faith and Freedom Coalition Speech]] · [[Texas Senate District 9 Special Election]] - [[Judd Legum]] — the vault's other one-person Substack source stream, on the money rather than the history
