# H.L. Hunt
Haroldson Lafayette Hunt Jr. (1889–1974) was a Dallas oil billionaire and one of the wealthiest Americans of his era, whose fortune bankrolled far-right media and causes in mid-century Texas. Hunt built Hunt Oil into a petroleum empire and used the proceeds to fund anticommunist propaganda operations, including the radio program *Life Line*, and to support the ultraconservative movement that gave 1960s Dallas its reputation as a right-wing hotbed.
His money — and that of his sons [[Nelson Bunker Hunt]] and [[William Herbert Hunt]] — flowed toward the [[John Birch Society]] and the broader machinery of the American right. The Hunt fortune is a founding case in the vault's oil-to-ideology pipeline, the pattern of Texas petroleum money purchasing political infrastructure.
