# George Orwell
George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair, 1903–1950) supplied the **working vocabulary of anti-totalitarian analysis** — Big Brother, the memory hole, doublethink, Newspeak, thoughtcrime, "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" — and the KB runs on it: [[The Memory Hole]] entry in the Disinformation lexicon is his coinage, and half the vault's analytical language for [[Propaganda]] and [[Post-Truth]] politics descends from *[[Nineteen Eighty-Four]]*. He matters here twice over: as the analyst whose core findings the KB applies daily, and as the century's most fought-over posthumous endorsement — a writer every faction claims and almost no faction reads to the end.
## What He Actually Found
**Totalitarianism attacks reality before it attacks people.** Orwell's deepest claim — formed watching propaganda outrun events in the [[Spanish Civil War]] — was that the modern regime's signature is not cruelty but the **abolition of objective truth**: "the very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world." History rewritten in real time (his *Homage to Catalonia* documents reading newspaper accounts of street fighting he had personally witnessed that bore no relation to events), the past mutable, the lie not merely told but *enforced as loyalty test*. 2+2=5 is the entire mechanism in four characters: the regime's power is proven precisely by compelling assent to the demonstrably false. This is the analytical core the KB applies to firehose-of-falsehood politics, loyalty-test claims (election denial as membership badge), and [[Post-Truth]] discourse generally — and it pairs with [[Hannah Arendt]]'s parallel finding that the ideal subject of totalitarian rule is the person for whom the distinction between fact and fiction no longer exists.
**Language is the battlefield.** "Politics and the English Language" (1946) and Newspeak formalize the claim that political euphemism is *operational*, not decorative — "pacification," "transfer of population," "elimination of unreliable elements" — language engineered to make atrocity thinkable by making it unsayable. The KB's standing attention to bureaucratic euphemism (the [[Wannsee Conference]] protocol's "evacuation"; "enhanced interrogation"; "remigration") is this finding applied.
**The Spanish education.** Orwell fought in Catalonia with the POUM militia (wounded through the throat), then watched the Stalinist liquidation of his comrades — denounced as fascists by the left press while fascism's actual armies advanced (see [[Spanish Civil War]], [[Homage to Catalonia]]). The experience fixed his two targets at once: he remained a self-described democratic socialist *and* became the English language's foremost anatomist of left-wing totalitarianism — the dual commitment that makes him unclaimable.
## The Custody Battle
Orwell is the KB's type case of **authority-by-citation**: "Orwellian" is among the most abused words in English (he predicted this too — "the word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies 'something not desirable'"). The right cites *[[Nineteen Eighty-Four]]* against "cancel culture," speech codes, and pandemic policy while running memory-hole operations on schoolbooks and election history; the left cites it against surveillance and disinformation while indulging its own euphemism industries. The KB's usage discipline: Orwell's tests are *mechanical*, and they cut whoever they cut — Who is compelling assent to falsehood? Who is rewriting the record? Whose euphemism is laundering what? A claim of "Orwellian" that cannot answer those questions is itself the abuse of language he catalogued.
## Why It Matters for the KB
**The lexicon's source.** Memory hole, doublethink, Newspeak, Big Brother — the Disinformation terminology layer's deepest roots are in this corpus; this page anchors them to the actual analysis rather than the slogan.
**The reality-defense charter.** "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four" is the KB's working definition of the stakes — the receipts-first, archive-everything method as institutionalized 2+2=4.
**The unclaimable witness.** A socialist who told the truth about socialism's totalitarian wing, an anti-imperialist who served the empire and said so — Orwell models the analytical posture the KB aspires to: loyalty to the record over the team.
