# Gavin Newsom
Democratic Governor of California since January 2019; previously Lieutenant Governor (2011–2019) and Mayor of San Francisco (2004–2011). Term-limited, with his governorship ending in January 2027. Widely treated as a 2028 presidential frontrunner — particularly after his role in the 2025–26 mid-decade redistricting fight cemented him as the most operationally aggressive Democrat in the country on partisan symmetry.
## 2025 mid-decade redistricting (Prop 50)
In July 2025, days after [[Donald Trump]] publicly directed Texas to redraw its congressional map, Newsom proposed that California suspend its **California Citizens Redistricting Commission** and let the legislature draw a Democratic-favorable map for the rest of the decade. He framed the move explicitly as a defensive countermeasure: "If they go low, we go high — but we don't lose."
On 2025-08-14 Newsom unveiled the **"Election Rigging Response Act"** — a constitutional amendment (ACA 8), an enabling map (AB 604), and a special-election call (SB 280). The legislature passed the package above the supermajority threshold on 2025-08-21 (Assembly 57–20; Senate 30–8); Newsom signed the same day. The resulting **California Proposition 50** went to a statewide special election on **2025-11-04** and passed 64.4%–35.6% in 8M+ ballots cast — projected to net Democrats **5 House seats** for 2026–2030, with the citizens' commission resuming authority after the 2030 cycle. See [[Redistricting Timeline 2025-2026]] and [[CA-41-2026]] for one of the marquee post-Prop-50 pickups.
The Yes campaign raised ~$120M with national Democratic backing (Obama, AOC, Clinton); the No campaign was funded almost entirely by **[[Charles Munger Jr]].** (~$33M of the $44M raised in opposition).
## 2024–2025 national posture
Newsom positioned California as the institutional opposition to the second Trump administration on immigration, climate, abortion access, and federal-workforce displacement — including filing or joining over 60 federal lawsuits in 2025 alone. His weekly *This Is Gavin Newsom* podcast and frequent national TV appearances are widely read as a 2028 primary infrastructure build.
