# G. William Miller **Status: stub — expand.** Chair of the [[Federal Reserve]] from **March 8, 1978 to August 6, 1979**, appointed by [[Jimmy Carter]] — one of the shortest chairmanships in the Fed's history. Born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma in 1925 and trained at the Coast Guard Academy and Berkeley law school, Miller came to the Fed from business rather than economics: he had risen to chairman and CEO of the conglomerate Textron, and had served as a director of the Boston Fed. The Federal Reserve's own history describes him as "less focused on combating inflation" and "intent on promoting economic growth even if it resulted in inflation," believing that the causes of rising prices lay largely outside the Fed's control. Inflation kept climbing through his tenure, the late stage of the [[Great Inflation]]. In August 1979 Carter moved him to Treasury Secretary, where he served to January 20, 1981, and replaced him at the Fed with [[Paul Volcker]]. Miller died in 2006. ## See also - [[Interest Rate Policy Timeline]] · [[Great Inflation]] · [[Arthur Burns]] · [[Volcker Shock]]
