# Frank Herbert
Frank Herbert (1920–1986) was an American science-fiction writer best known for [[Dune]] (1965) and its sequels — the best-selling SF novel of all time and the source of one of the AI debate's favorite reference points. Herbert's work is dense with ecology, religion, and a deep suspicion of charismatic leaders and messianic politics, themes the tech world tends to read past on its way to the imagery.
## Dune and the Butlerian Jihad
*Dune* is set in a far future explicitly shaped by the **Butlerian Jihad** — a long-past holy war in which humanity rose up and destroyed all "thinking machines" and computers, leaving behind the commandment: "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." In *Dune*'s universe, the ban on AI forced humans to develop their own faculties instead (the Mentats, the Bene Gesserit). This backstory has become a stock allusion in Silicon Valley's AI-doom discourse — invoked whenever someone argues that the safe move is *not to build* a particular class of machine intelligence. It is the genre's sharpest anti-AI parable, a useful counterweight to the build-everything creed of [[Effective Accelerationism]].
Herbert's larger warning — that *Dune* is a critique of the charismatic-savior politics its hero Paul Atreides embodies, not a celebration of it — is frequently inverted by readers who take Paul as an aspirational figure. That selective reading is itself characteristic of how the canon is consumed.
## Influence on the tech elite
The Herbert connection is real but diffuse: no major founder cites *Dune* as a formative influence the way [[Elon Musk]] cites [[Isaac Asimov]]. (Musk has casually praised *Dune* and, notably, *misattributed* quotes to it — a 2022 line he credited to Herbert is actually Carl Jung.) Herbert's place in [[Science Fiction and the Tech Elite]] rests on the Butlerian Jihad as a meme in [[AI Safety]] debate rather than on any individual disciple.
