# Eric Metaxas
Eric Metaxas (b. 1963) is an American evangelical author, broadcaster, and political commentator whose 2010 biography *Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy* became a bestselling and culturally influential text in evangelical and conservative-Christian circles, and whose subsequent trajectory — through Trump-era political activism, the 2020 election-denial movement, and his 2022 polemic *Letter to the American Church* — has made him one of the most prominent **mainstream-evangelical-to-Christian-Nationalism bridges** in American religious media. His daily program *The Eric Metaxas Show* aired on Salem Radio Network from 2015 until **September 2025, when Salem eliminated the show as part of broader programming layoffs**; Salem replaced it with Kevin McCullough's *That KEVIN Show* on November 24, 2025. As of April 2026, Metaxas continues a [[YouTube]] show and has announced plans for a late-night TV program. The Salem disconnection — without any cited controversy beyond programming changes — is nonetheless a meaningful structural shift: Metaxas spent a decade as one of Salem's most prominent hosts, and Salem's decision to drop him at a moment of contracting talk-radio economics is the single most significant change to his platform footprint in the past decade.
## Role in the religious-right ecosystem
Metaxas occupies an unusual structural position. He is **not** a [[New Apostolic Reformation]] figure (he is a fairly conventional Greek Orthodox-raised, evangelical-aligned writer), **not** a Reconstructionist (no Rushdoony lineage), and **not** a paleoconservative. What he is, instead, is the **respectability bridge** — the educated, urbane, articulate evangelical voice (Yale undergrad; New York City–based; *Veggie Tales* writer credit; *Socrates in the City* speaking series) who can carry positions associated with the harder-right religious movements into mainstream-evangelical and educated-Christian audiences without triggering the rejection those audiences would give to a [[Douglas Wilson]] or a [[Bill Johnson]].
That bridge function was the through-line:
- His 2010 *Bonhoeffer* biography — about the German Lutheran pastor who resisted the Nazi state and was executed in 1945 — became, for many post-2016 conservative Christians, the **interpretive frame for thinking about American politics**. The implicit and increasingly explicit analogy was: secular American progressivism stands in the same relationship to American Christianity that National Socialism stood in to the Confessing Church. Metaxas himself made this analogy explicit in *Letter to the American Church* (2022).
- His Trump-era trajectory — including a notable 2020 podcast appearance with Charlie Kirk in which Metaxas declared he was "willing to die" to keep Trump in office — pulled him from mainstream evangelical respectability into the explicit election-denial and pre-January-6 mobilization space.
- His Jericho March and [[Stop the Steal]]–adjacent activity in late 2020 / early 2021 made the Bonhoeffer analogy operational: if this is Nazi Germany and 2020 is 1933, then ordinary political process is itself the threat, and resistance is righteous.
This trajectory is a useful **case study in how mainstream evangelical media bridges to Christian Nationalism**. Metaxas did not begin as a Christian Nationalist; arguably he still rejects that label. But the rhetorical machinery he built — Bonhoeffer-as-frame, "the American Church is failing," secular government as proto-totalitarian — is the same machinery operating in much harder-right religious media, and Metaxas has, by 2024–2026, become functionally indistinguishable in his political commentary from explicit Christian Nationalists.
## Key episodes
- **2007 — *Amazing Grace* (William Wilberforce biography).** Metaxas's first major mainstream evangelical bestseller; framed through the abolitionist-Christian-activism lens.
- **2010 — *Bonhoeffer*.** Bestseller; widely adopted in evangelical book clubs and seminaries; established Metaxas as a major evangelical public intellectual.
- **2015 — *Eric Metaxas Show* launches** on Salem Radio Network. Two-hour daily program from 2–4 PM ET.
- **2016 — Trump endorsement.** Metaxas explicitly endorsed Trump in 2016, breaking with much mainstream evangelical hesitation; defended the choice with an essay arguing that the alternative ([[Hillary Clinton]]) was an "existential" threat.
- **2020–2021 — Election denial activism.** Hosted Trump and other figures pushing election-fraud claims; participated in the December 2020 Jericho March; the "willing to die" comment with Charlie Kirk.
- **2022 — *Letter to the American Church*.** Polemic explicitly framing American secular progressivism as analogous to German National Socialism, calling on pastors to actively oppose the political left from the pulpit.
- **September 2025 — Salem Radio show eliminated.** Part of broader Salem layoffs; Metaxas exited the company.
- **November 24, 2025 — Replacement.** Salem launches Kevin McCullough's *That KEVIN Show* in the same daily slot.
- **2026 — Independent platform.** Continues YouTube show; announces a late-night TV program in development.
## Connections
- [[Donald Trump]] — Endorsed in 2016 and 2020; hosted Trump on his program; aligned with election-denial movement.
- [[David Barton]] — Adjacent figure in the "Christian-historical-revisionism" wing of evangelical media; both share the Christian-founding-narrative framework.
- [[Charlie Kirk]] — Co-host of the 2020 podcast appearance featuring the "willing to die" comment.
- [[Salem Media Group]] — Decade-plus institutional home; relationship ended September 2025.
- [[Christian Nationalism]] — Metaxas resists the label but his rhetorical machinery and political commitments map onto the movement.
