# Emmanuel Macron
**Emmanuel Macron** (b. December 21, 1977) has been President of France since May 2017 — elected at 39, the youngest head of state in the Fifth Republic, as the centrist who beat [[Marine Le Pen]] twice (2017, 2022) by assembling a coalition whose only shared premise was keeping the [[National Rally]] out. His second and final term ends **May 13, 2027**; the constitution bars a third consecutive one, and the election of **April 18 / May 2, 2027** will be the first since 2012 without him. He is in the vault as the European leader who has spent the second Trump term trying to manage the American president rather than oppose him, and as the plaintiff in a defamation suit against an American right-wing broadcaster.
## The Trump years
- **The 2026 Iran war.** France's position — support for the strikes' aim, alarm at their conduct, and insistence on a negotiated end — made Macron the intermediary. He hosted the **G7 at Évian-les-Bains (June 15–17, 2026)**, where Trump, unlike at Kananaskis the year before, stayed to the end and signed on to "unwavering support" for Ukraine — and where, on the summit's last day, **June 17, 2026**, Trump and Iran's president signed the fourteen-point [[Trump-Iran MOU 2026]] at a Versailles dinner Macron hosted. The peace lasted three weeks; the [[Iran War 2026 Timeline]] has the rest. He appears in the [[Munich Security Conference]] and [[Coalition of the Willing]] pages as the leader who kept proposing a European force for Ukraine that no one would staff.
- **The domestic collapse.** Macron's decision to dissolve the National Assembly in June 2024 produced a hung parliament, four prime ministers in eighteen months and a right that no longer needs him. The 2027 field is the largest in the Republic's history — Retailleau for the Republicans, Philippe and Attal from his own camp, [[Jordan Bardella]] or Le Pen for the National Rally after a July 7, 2026 appeals ruling cut her ineligibility to a term that leaves her eligible, Mélenchon on the left. See [[French Fifth Republic]] and the [[French History Hub]].
- **The American right.** Macron and his wife sued [[Candace Owens]] in Delaware in July 2025 over her claim that Brigitte Macron was born male — see [[Macron v. Owens Defamation Lawsuit]] — which gives him a second foothold in the vault, as the target of the conspiracy-media ecosystem rather than as a statesman. His September 2026 state visit to Britain and his op-eds on AI and the creative industries mark the late-term turn to legacy.
## Why he matters here
Macron is the test case for the "Trump whisperer" theory of European diplomacy — flattery, ceremony and Versailles — and the record is mixed: the ceremony produced signatures, and the signatures did not hold. He is also what the European far right has been running against for a decade, and the 2027 election will show whether the cordon that elected him twice survives his departure. Compare [[Marine Le Pen]], [[Marion Maréchal]] and the [[Dreyfus Affair]] page for the longer French argument he inherited.
