# Elly Schlein Secretary of Italy's centre-left **Democratic Party (PD)** since 2023 and the chief parliamentary opponent of [[Giorgia Meloni]]'s government — the most successful hard-right government in Western Europe, rooted in the post-fascist tradition of Brothers of Italy. Schlein's job is the mirror image of Magyar's or Tusk's: not unseating an entrenched autocrat, but preventing a normalized, democratically elected radical-right government from consolidating a durable majority. ## An insurgent leadership Italian-American by birth (with Swiss and Jewish heritage) and shaped partly by Obama-era U.S. campaign organizing, Schlein won the PD leadership in a **March 2023 open-primary upset**, defeating the party establishment's favored candidate on a more unabashedly progressive platform. She is the first woman to lead the PD and pushed it leftward on climate, labor, and civil rights. ## The opposition arithmetic Meloni's coalition has proven stable, and polling through 2026 shows Brothers of Italy comfortably ahead — roughly 28 percent to the PD's 22–23 percent. Schlein's strategic problem is coalition-building: a viable alternative requires stitching together the PD, the Five Star Movement, and the smaller Greens-and-Left bloc (the "campo largo," or broad field) into something that can contest the 2027 general election, despite real programmatic friction among them. Her resistance is thus as much about assembling a credible opposition as about any single confrontation with the government. ## Related - [[International Democratic Opposition Hub]] - [[Giorgia Meloni]]
