# David Pecker
**David Pecker** (b. Sept 24, 1951) ran [[American Media Inc]] (AMI), publisher of [[The National Enquirer]], as CEO from 1999 to 2020. He turned the country's best-known supermarket tabloid into covert infrastructure for Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, then helped convict him. He is the vault's clearest example of media power used as an unreported campaign contribution, the practice now known as **[[Catch and Kill]]**.
## The arrangement
In **August 2015**, Pecker met Trump and [[Michael Cohen]] at Trump Tower and offered to be the campaign's "eyes and ears." AMI would watch for damaging stories about women and buy them to keep them from being published. Its payouts:
- **Late 2015:** **$30,000** to Trump Tower doorman Dino Sajudin for an unsubstantiated rumor.
- **August 2016:** **$150,000** to former Playboy model Karen McDougal for the rights to her account of an affair with Trump.
AMI also ran the offensive side. The Enquirer's front pages attacked Trump's primary rivals and Hillary Clinton through 2016.
When the [[Stormy Daniels]] story surfaced in October 2016, Pecker declined to pay. Cohen paid her **$130,000** himself, and that payment became the basis of the criminal case.
## Cooperation
AMI's **non-prosecution agreement** with federal prosecutors in Manhattan became public on **Dec 12, 2018**, the day Cohen was sentenced. In it, AMI admitted the McDougal payment was made to influence the election. In **June 2021** the FEC fined AMI's successor company **$187,500** for the illegal in-kind contribution. Pecker personally was not a party to the fine.
AMI agreed to sell the Enquirer in April 2019. The company was renamed a360 Media ahead of a 2020 merger, and Pecker was removed as CEO in August 2020, staying on as an adviser.
## The witness
Pecker was the **first prosecution witness** in Manhattan District Attorney [[Alvin Bragg]]'s case. He testified over four days in April 2024 and laid out the 2015 meeting and the scheme it set up. The jury convicted Trump on all 34 counts in May 2024, and he received an unconditional discharge in January 2025. As of Oct 1, 2026:
- **State appeal:** Trump's appeal to the Appellate Division is fully briefed. The DA responded in July 2026, and no ruling has been issued.
- **Federal removal:** on **Aug 28, 2026**, Judge Alvin Hellerstein rejected Trump's bid to move the case to federal court for the third time. Trump's lawyers say they will appeal.
No public activity by Pecker since the trial has been found.
## Why he matters
Pecker shows that the pre-digital version of "flooding the zone" was **buying silence**. A friendly publisher with a checkbook can do more for a campaign than any ad buy, and before 2018 the only record of it was in a tabloid's contracts file.
