# Daryl Caudle **Status: stub — expand.** Adm. **Daryl L. Caudle**, USN — the **34th Chief of Naval Operations**, confirmed by the Senate in a late-night vote on **July 31, 2025** and reported the following morning. The vote was unanimous, and came after Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) released a hold he had placed over a demand that the Defense Department reopen a naval base in Alaska. A career submariner, Caudle commanded **U.S. Fleet Forces Command** from December 2021 until taking the top Navy job. He succeeded **Adm. Lisa Franchetti**, whom Secretary of Defense [[Pete Hegseth]] removed in February 2025 — the first woman to serve as a service chief. The post sat vacant for roughly half a year between the firing and Caudle's confirmation. See [[United States Navy]]. ## The August 2026 non-concurrence Caudle's significance to this knowledge base is not his biography but a single document. In the classified **Secretary of Defense Orders Book** dated **August 14, 2026**, Caudle registered the bluntest of the service chiefs' warnings that the [[Iran War 2026]] could not be sustained at its then-current tempo: the Navy, which has carried the bulk of the operation, **cannot sustain its current level of support** because no end date is anticipated. Reporting on the orders book by Alex Horton and Tara Copp of the *Washington Post* on **August 30, 2026** described barely a quarter of the Navy's destroyer fleet as deployable, with maintenance backlogs threatening the readiness of the rest. Caudle was among the flag officers recorded as **not concurring** with plans to extend the alert posture — alongside the commanders of U.S. European Command, U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Southern Command. Non-concurrence is a formal act of dissent inside the staffing process; it is not refusal, and the officers were expected to execute the orders regardless. See [[Combatant Commands]]. The dissent is notable because of who was receiving it. Hegseth had by then removed or forced into early retirement a series of senior officers, and the [[Armed Forces Hub]] records the pattern. A service chief putting non-concurrence in writing to that Secretary is a measurable data point about how far the intimidation had — and had not — worked. ## See Also - [[United States Navy]] - [[Pete Hegseth]] - [[Iran War 2026 Timeline]] - [[Armed Forces Hub]] - [[Combatant Commands]]
