# Daniel Kahneman The psychologist who **demolished the rational-actor model** in social science. Kahneman (1934–2024), working with [[Amos Tversky]] for two decades starting in 1969, produced the "heuristics and biases" research program that established human cognition as systematically biased rather than coolly rational. Their work became the foundation of behavioral economics and earned Kahneman the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (Tversky having died in 1996, six years before the prize). Kahneman matters to the RWKB because his catalog of cognitive biases is the *technical specification* of the failure modes that right-wing political operatives, dark-money groups, and propaganda systems are exploiting at population scale. Understanding what they're doing requires understanding the cognitive machinery they're targeting, and Kahneman wrote the manual. ## Core Contributions ### Prospect Theory (1979, with Tversky) The founding paper of behavioral economics. Prospect theory replaced the standard expected-utility model of decision-making under risk with an empirically grounded alternative: people weight losses about twice as heavily as equivalent gains (loss aversion), evaluate outcomes relative to a reference point rather than in absolute terms, and systematically misestimate probabilities — overweighting small probabilities and underweighting large ones. The paper is one of the most-cited in economics and reshaped how decision-making is modeled across the social sciences. ### The Heuristics and Biases Program Beginning with the 1974 *Science* paper "Judgment Under Uncertainty," Kahneman and Tversky catalogued the mental shortcuts (heuristics) people use to make probability judgments and the systematic errors (biases) those shortcuts produce. The major heuristics they identified — representativeness, availability, anchoring-and-adjustment — became the standard vocabulary for analyzing reasoning failures. The 1982 Cambridge volume *Judgment Under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases* (edited with Paul Slovic) collected the foundational work. ### System 1 and System 2 *[[Thinking Fast and Slow]]* (2011) presented Kahneman's mature synthesis: human cognition operates through two systems. System 1 is fast, automatic, intuitive, and emotion-driven; System 2 is slow, deliberate, analytical, and effortful. Most cognition is System 1; System 2 is engaged only when problems require it, and is easily fatigued. Many cognitive biases arise because System 1 produces an answer that feels right and System 2 fails to override it. The framework has become the standard model in popular treatments of cognition. ## KB Significance **1. The biases catalog as propaganda specification.** Right-wing media, dark-money advertising, and conspiracy networks are not exploiting random cognitive vulnerabilities — they are exploiting the specific, well-cataloged biases that Kahneman documented. Loss aversion drives [[Great Replacement]] framing (loss of demographic dominance feels existential); availability heuristic drives crime panic (vivid stories outweigh base rates); anchoring drives Overton-window manipulation. The biases are real; the operators are weaponizing them. **2. The defense framework.** Kahneman's work also provides the basis for resistance. Naming the bias is the first step in disarming it. The discipline of asking "what's my reference point?" or "is this availability or evidence?" or "what's the base rate?" is what the [[Decision Science]] folder operationalizes for political reasoning. **3. Connection to Munger's Tradition.** Kahneman is the academic counterpart to the [[Charlie Munger]]–[[Shane Parrish]] mental-models tradition. Munger built his lattice of mental models partly by absorbing Kahneman's research; the [[Decision Science]] heavily overlap with the Kahneman-Tversky catalog. Reading both traditions together is more useful than either alone. ## See Also - [[Amos Tversky]] — Lifelong collaborator; the partnership that produced the field - [[Thinking Fast and Slow]] — The mature synthesis - [[Judgment Under Uncertainty]] — The foundational 1982 Cambridge volume - [[Dual-Process Theory]] — The standalone Concept entry for the System 1 / System 2 framework, connecting it to the vault's propaganda analysis - [[Power Theory]] — The analytical framework; Kahneman provides the cognitive architecture - [[Jonathan Haidt]] — moral intuitions operate on System 1; the Kahneman-Haidt-Lakoff cognitive-politics stack - [[George Lakoff]] — frames activate System 1's intuitive processing; the linguistic mechanism of Kahneman's dual-process architecture - [[Albert Bandura]] — moral disengagement operates through System 1 rationalization - [[Enchanted America]] — Oliver & Wood's empirical finding that intuitionist cognition (System 1-dominant) has been ideologically sorted onto the right - [[Entzauberung]] — the re-enchantment demand as a System 1 phenomenon; the iron cage is System 2's world - [[Richard Thaler]] — Built behavioral economics as a discipline on Kahneman's foundation - [[Charlie Munger]] — The applied counterpart to Kahneman's academic work - [[Prospect Theory]] — The foundational 1979 paper - [[Ecological Rationality]] — Gigerenzer's counterpoint to the heuristics-and-biases program - [[Keith Stanovich]] — Refined the dual-process framework with the intelligence/rationality distinction - [[Decision Science]] — The hub where this work lives - [[Political Psychology]] — the hub page
