# Daniel Cameron
**Daniel Cameron** (b. Nov 22, 1985) was Kentucky's attorney general from December 2019 to January 2024. He was the state's first African American attorney general and [[Mitch McConnell]]'s most prominent protégé. He has now lost two statewide races in three years, and both losses mark the decline of the McConnell brand inside a Kentucky Republican Party that now answers to Trump.
## Attorney general
Cameron had been McConnell's legal counsel, and in 2019 he was elected attorney general, the post that made him a national figure. His defining moment came in **September 2020**, when he presented the Breonna Taylor case to a Louisville grand jury. Only one officer, Brett Hankison, was charged, and not for Taylor's death. Grand jurors later said they had been presented with charges against Hankison alone. That episode followed Cameron into every later race.
## Two losses
- **Governor, 2023.** As the Republican nominee he lost to Democratic incumbent [[Andy Beshear]], **53% to 47%**, in a state Trump carried by 26 points.
- **Senate, 2026.** Running for McConnell's open seat, he led the early polling. A co/efficient poll in October 2025 had him at 39% to [[Andy Barr]]'s 22%; only one source reports it. Then:
- **May 1, 2026:** Trump endorsed Barr, and [[Nate Morris]] left the race the same day.
- **May 5:** Cameron vowed to keep fighting.
- **May 19:** the certified result was **Barr 60.5%, Cameron 30.8%**. Cameron conceded and praised Barr's campaign.
The early AP call of 64–28 was based on 5% of the vote and overstated the margin. No new public role for Cameron after the primary has been found as of Oct 1, 2026.
## Why he matters
Cameron is the control case in [[Trump Endorsement Power Post-2024]]. He had everything the pre-Trump party valued: McConnell's sponsorship, a statewide win, national exposure and an early lead. One Trump post three weeks before the primary was worth more. See [[KY-Sen-2026]].
