# Dan Quayle
**Dan Quayle** (b. 1947) served as the 44th Vice President of the United States under [[George H.W. Bush]] from 1989 to 1993. A former Indiana senator, Quayle became one of the most ridiculed figures in modern American politics — lampooned for gaffes including misspelling "potato" at a school event — but his political significance extends beyond the caricature.
Quayle's 1992 "Murphy Brown speech," in which he attacked the television character for "mocking the importance of fathers" by having a child out of wedlock, was an early salvo in what became the dominant [[Culture War]] framework of the 1990s and beyond. The speech articulated a "family values" politics that linked social conservatism, personal responsibility rhetoric, and implicit racial coding into a [[Republican Party]] messaging strategy that persists to this day. Quayle also played a notable role in the January 6 backstory: he reportedly advised Mike Pence that the Vice President had no constitutional authority to reject electoral votes, helping avert a deeper constitutional crisis.
