# Christopher Wray **Christopher Asher Wray** (b. December 17, 1966, New York City) was the eighth Director of the [[FBI]], from August 2, 2017 to January 19, 2025 — nominated by [[Donald Trump]] to replace the fired [[James Comey]], confirmed **92–5**, and driven out seven years into a ten-year term by the president who appointed him. He is the vault's cleanest case of the institutionalist Republican whose loyalty to the Bureau's procedures made him, in the movement's telling, a member of the "deep state" he had been hired to clean up. ## Before the Bureau Yale (BA 1989) and Yale Law (JD 1992); a federal prosecutor in Atlanta; then, under George W. Bush, Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division (September 2003–May 2005), where he oversaw the [[Enron]] task force and, in the March 2004 confrontation over warrantless surveillance, was among the officials prepared to resign with Comey. Seventeen years at King & Spalding followed, chairing its government-investigations practice and representing [[Chris Christie]] personally during Bridgegate. The résumé is the point: he was a conservative, corporate, Federalist-Society-adjacent lawyer with no history of partisanship. ## Director, 2017–2025 - **Russia and its aftermath.** Inherited [[Crossfire Hurricane]] and the [[Mueller Investigation]]; accepted the December 2019 [[Michael Horowitz]] findings of FISA failures and ordered remedial reforms, which earned Trump's "badly broken" (December 9, 2019). In April 2020 Trump considered firing him and backed off when Attorney General [[William Barr]] said he would resign. - **Domestic terrorism.** Told the Senate on March 2, 2021 that the [[January 6 Capitol Attack]] was [[Domestic Terrorism]]; in June 2020 corrected his own "anarchists exploiting protests" line to say [[Antifa]] is "an ideology rather than an organization," a formulation Trump never forgave. Ordered the withdrawal of the 2023 Richmond field-office memo on "radical traditionalist Catholics" when it leaked. See [[Domestic Terrorism Framing]]. - **China.** Made counterintelligence against Beijing the Bureau's signature public message — a new China case "every 10 hours" (2020). See [[China]]. - **Trump investigations.** Approved, in April 2022, the "Arctic Frost" sensitive-investigative-matter into the fake-elector scheme that [[Jack Smith]] later absorbed; the Bureau executed the August 2022 search in the [[Mar-a-Lago Documents Case]]. Testified in July 2024 on the [[Butler Assassination Attempt]] and the Bureau's failures there. - **Departure.** Announced his resignation **December 11, 2024**, after Trump named [[Kash Patel]] as his intended successor, and left on January 19, 2025 — choosing, as he told staff, to go "in the way that's best for the Bureau" rather than be fired. Since 2025 he has been a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the [[Hoover Institution]]. ## The pursuit since The second term has treated Wray as a target rather than an alumnus. On September 29, 2025 — four days after the [[Comey Indictment]] — Trump said he "would think" the Justice Department was investigating Wray, and demanded on [[Truth Social]] the names of "274 FBI agents" a Blaze Media story claimed were in the January 6 crowd as "agitators" (the DOJ Inspector General had found no undercover FBI employees in the crowd). [[Chuck Grassley]] and [[Ron Johnson]] have released the Arctic Frost records piecemeal since early 2025, framing Wray, [[Merrick Garland]] and Lisa Monaco as its approvers; the Senate Judiciary Committee announced a series of 2026 Arctic Frost hearings on December 8, 2025; a conservative watchdog filed a bar complaint against him in March 2026. No charge against Wray has been reported. The pattern is the one [[Andrew McCabe]] and Comey established: the offense is not partisanship but *continuity* — running the investigations the law required regardless of subject — and the punishment is retrospective, arriving once the Bureau is under [[Kash Patel]].
