# Cheryl Mason
**Cheryl Mason** is the Senate-confirmed Inspector General of the [[Department of Veterans Affairs]] and, since April 6, 2026, chair of CIGIE, the statutory council of the federal inspector general community. She was confirmed in 2025 on a party-line vote after serving as a senior adviser to VA Secretary Doug Collins — a résumé that drew objections from Senate Democrats and oversight groups, who argued an IG should not have advised the head of the agency she now audits. She was elected CIGIE chair on March 24, 2026 in an uncontested race to finish the term running through December 31, 2026, succeeding acting chair Tammy Hull (USPS IG). Sen. Tammy Duckworth cited her confirmation in introducing a bill to bar former political appointees of a sitting administration from IG posts. Her selection is the reference point for the vault's observation that the 2025 purge was followed not by vacant seats but by seats refilled from inside the administration.
