# C. Everett Koop
U.S. Surgeon General 1982–1989 (1916–2013). Pediatric surgeon and evangelical Christian appointed by [[Ronald Reagan]] as a Religious Right trophy pick — who then horrified his patrons by treating the [[AIDS Crisis]] as epidemiology rather than theology. Barred from addressing AIDS during Reagan's first term, he issued the blunt 1986 Surgeon General's report (explicit sex education, condoms) and the 1988 *Understanding AIDS* mailer to all 107 million U.S. households — the largest public-health mailing in American history. The vault's cleanest case study of a movement conservative choosing professional duty over coalition loyalty. See [[AIDS Crisis Timeline]].
