# Brett Favre
Brett Favre is a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback and Mississippi native who became the highest-profile figure in the [[Mississippi Welfare Funds Scandal]]. Federal anti-poverty (TANF) money was steered toward a volleyball facility at the University of Southern Mississippi, where Favre's daughter played, and the nonprofit Mississippi Community Education Center, run by [[Nancy New]], paid Favre $1.1 million in welfare funds for speaking appearances and ads that the state auditor said never occurred.
Favre repaid the $1.1 million but the auditor maintains he still owes interest; he has been named in the state's civil suit but has not been criminally charged. Text messages released in the case show Favre coordinating with Gov. [[Phil Bryant]] and asking whether payments to him could be kept from the media.
