# Brenton Tarrant **Brenton Harrison Tarrant** (b. 1990, Grafton, New South Wales) is the Australian white-nationalist terrorist who murdered 51 worshippers at two Christchurch mosques on March 15, 2019 — the [[Christchurch Mosque Shootings]] — livestreaming the first attack on Facebook after posting his manifesto, [[The Great Replacement (Tarrant Manifesto)]], to [[8chan]]. He is serving New Zealand's first sentence of life without parole. In this vault he is not primarily a biography; he is the type specimen of a *method* — the self-radicalized, manifesto-writing, livestreaming attacker who designs the atrocity as content for the network that produced him — and the figure whom [[Saint Culture]] canonized. ## Radicalization The Royal Commission's account (December 2020) is of a man radicalized almost entirely alone and online. A personal trainer in Grafton until an inheritance let him stop working, he travelled widely between 2014 and 2018 — Europe, the Balkans, Turkey, Pakistan, North Korea — and the manifesto later claimed the 2017 Stockholm attack and the sight of immigrants in a French town as turning points. He donated to [[Generation Identity]]'s Austrian leader Martin Sellner and corresponded with him; he read [[Renaud Camus]], whose *Le Grand Remplacement* gave the document its title and the [[Great Replacement Theory]] its European respectability. He moved to Dunedin in 2017, joined a rifle club, and legally acquired his weapons under a licence the Commission found had been granted on inadequate referee checks. New Zealand's security agencies, focused almost exclusively on Islamist threats, had no file on him. ## The manifesto's architecture The 74-page document is built for two readers at once. For the press it plants memes, contradictory claims (he called himself an "eco-fascist" and, in the same breath, disclaimed politics), Navy SEAL copypasta and the instruction to "subscribe to PewDiePie," so that any journalist quoting it would spread the joke and discredit themselves. For the chans it is sincere: the [[Fourteen Words and 1488]], the replacement arithmetic, [[Ecofascism]]'s claim that immigration is an environmental crime, and the explicit accelerationist goal — provoke overreaction, gun confiscation and civil conflict in the United States, where the guns are ([[Accelerationism (White Nationalist)]]). The vault's [[Great Replacement Visual Memes]] and [[Sonnenrad (Black Sun)]] pages inventory the iconography; the [[Scientific Racism]] page the pseudo-data. The document is the reason platforms now treat manifestos as terrorist content rather than speech. ## The lineage Tarrant named his predecessors on his weapons — Breivik ([[2011 Norway Attacks]]), the Charleston and Quebec City shooters, historical battles — and his successors named him: Poway, [[El Paso Walmart Shooting]], Halle and the [[Buffalo Tops Supermarket Shooting]] all cited Christchurch, and Buffalo copied the manifesto's structure nearly verbatim. That is what [[Leaderless Resistance]] looks like in practice and why the [[Online Radicalization Pipeline]] page uses him as the worked example: no organization, no order, a template. ## Legal record Guilty plea March 26, 2020 (51 murders, 40 attempted murders, one terrorism charge); sentenced August 27, 2020 to life without parole; held in a purpose-built unit at Auckland Prison. In February 2026 he sought to withdraw the plea, arguing that his pre-trial detention had been "torturous and inhumane" and left him unable to decide rationally; the Court of Appeal dismissed the application on **April 30, 2026** as "utterly devoid of merit," finding the pleas voluntary and his evidence internally inconsistent. > [!warning] Name collision > "Tarrant" in the vault's Texas material is **Tarrant County** — see [[Tarrant County]]. Text mentions of the surname are this page's subject about nine times in ten; the county page is the one that gets contaminated. ## See Also - [[Christchurch Mosque Shootings]] · [[The Great Replacement (Tarrant Manifesto)]] · [[Great Replacement Theory]] · [[Renaud Camus]] · [[Generation Identity]] - [[Saint Culture]] · [[Leaderless Resistance]] · [[Online Radicalization Pipeline]] · [[Accelerationism (White Nationalist)]] · [[Stochastic Terrorism]] · [[8chan]] - [[2011 Norway Attacks]] · [[El Paso Walmart Shooting]] · [[Buffalo Tops Supermarket Shooting]] · [[White Nationalism]] · [[Ecofascism]]
