# Angie Nixon
Florida state Representative from **Jacksonville** since 2020, union organizer, and the **2026 Democratic nominee for Florida's U.S. Senate special election** — facing appointed Republican Sen. [[Ashley Moody]] for the remainder of Marco Rubio's Class 3 term.
## The August 18 upset
Nixon beat [[Alexander Vindman]] by **12 points** in the Democratic primary having raised **$975,000 to his $16.3 million** — roughly a 17-to-1 spending disadvantage against the retired Lt. Col. who was the key witness in Trump's first impeachment and the presumptive nominee for most of the cycle.
It is the largest upset of the 2026 primary season and, by the count of several outlets, the **first time a member of the Democratic Socialists of America has won a major-party nomination for statewide office in the United States**.
If elected she would be the first Black person and the first Democratic woman to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate. Cook rates the seat Solid R.
## On the DSA question — be precise
This is already an active attack line and the vault should not launder either campaign's framing:
- Nixon **joined DSA in June 2026**, during the campaign.
- She was **not a DSA-endorsed candidate**.
- She has said she does not agree with DSA on all issues.
- Moody's campaign has characterized her as a DSA standard-bearer. **PolitiFact and WLRN examined those characterizations in late August 2026 and found them misleading.**
Her own stated platform: Medicare for All, a $25-per-hour federal minimum wage, a billionaire tax, state-provided childcare, tuition-free public college, and student-debt cancellation. Her campaign slogan — "Unbought & Unbossed" — is Shirley Chisholm's.
## The Vance exchange — October 1, 2026
Campaigning at Lakeland Linder International Airport in Lakeland, Florida, Vice President [[JD Vance]] described Nixon as a self-described socialist and said: **"Get the hell out of here. You don't belong in America."** It is the point at which the DSA attack line moved from [[Ashley Moody]]'s campaign to the national ticket.
Nixon's reply, to CBS News Miami, is a documented statement of her own self-description and belongs on this page for that reason — the page's standing instruction is to record her sourced words rather than either campaign's characterization:
> [!quote] Angie Nixon, October 2026
> "It's very disrespectful. It's really disheartening, especially knowing that I come from folks who helped build this country, and my grandparents were sharecroppers in southern Georgia. And all I want for people is to have access to quality healthcare, to have access to fully funded public schools, for people to have homes to live in, and not have to worry about living on the streets. … And I don't consider myself a socialist. I consider myself a lifelong Democrat who puts people over party, people over politics, and people over profit."
This is now the clearest first-person statement of how she positions herself against the label, and it should be cited in preference to the DSA-membership timeline when the question is what she says she is. See [[FL-Sen-2026-Special]].
## Why this race matters beyond Florida
The Vindman campaign was the cycle's clearest test of whether **national small-dollar anti-Trump donor networks convert into local electoral coalitions**. $16.3 million says the money mobilizes; a 12-point loss says it does not organize. That distinction is the transferable finding, and it is not about ideology.

Six years in the Florida House — committee work, notable bills, her role in the 2023 redistricting and abortion fights — are unwritten.
